Memorial News
May 2019
From Mr. Collier
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Where has this school year gone? May of 2019 has arrived, and we have many activities happening at Memorial School. May is Teacher Appreciation month. I want to take a moment to thank our Memorial Staff for their outstanding work which allows our students to grow academical, socially, and emotionally. Thank you for all that you do for our students. Our third and fourth grade students are currently taking the New Jersey Student Learning Assessment. This new assessment replaced PARCC. Good luck to our students!
Over spring recess, Memorial School had some major enhancements to improve our facilities and security. There is a new security vestibule in the front of the building. Only those parents and visitors with an appointment will be allowed into the building. Thank you to the Montvale PTO for purchasing A/C units for our first and second grade classrooms. The electrical work to power those units will be done over the summer. Finally, there is new classroom flooring in room 112, 115, 116, 117, 118, and 120.
We currently have 78 kindergarten students registered for September. At this point in time, we are considering five sections of kindergarten. If you know of anyone who has a child that will be coming to kindergarten in September of 2019, please advise them to register as soon as possible.
On Sunday, May 12th, we thank our mothers, grandmothers, and godmothers who are very special to us. I would like extend my sincere appreciation to all our moms for everything that they do to support and care for our children. I wish you a happy and healthy Mother’s Day!
Finally, on Monday, May 27th, we remember and honor those men and women who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Let us never forget those men and women who sacrificed their lives for our safety and freedom! Thank you.

Lightning Detector Alert Procedures at Memorial School
The lightning detection system provides valuable information in that while the alert is active, the fields are closed and adults/children should seek an immediate safe shelter (i.e. vehicle, school building). At Memorial Elementary School, the lightning detector light is located on the Department of Public Works building and on the snack shed. If an alarm is active (it is a bright flashing light), please follow the procedures below:
A.M. Drop-off & P.M. Pick-Up:
In the morning, parents will be able to drop their child(ren) off at the Community Entrance. Parents will be allowed to drive down the KinderPath, along the side of the building closest to the back doors of the gym, stop at the Community Entrance to drop their child(ren), and drive back out on to Memorial Drive.
In the afternoon, parents are asked to drive by the side of the gym, stop, and announce who they are picking up. Our staff will have walkie-talkies to convey your child’s name to the other teachers supervising the gym. All four back doors of the gym will be used to dismiss students safely to the family’s vehicle.
In the event that this procedure needs to be utilized, an announcement will be broadcasted through Memorial School’s Twitter and email system.
Teacher Appreciation Day
On Monday, May 6th, we will be celebrating Teacher Appreciation Day here at Memorial School. This is a terrific time to have your child thank his/her teachers for their hard work and dedication. As a token of appreciation, our PTO will be coordinating a lunch for all the teachers and support staff on this special day.
Student Dress Attire for School
Please remember that there is a district dress code that students must follow. These rules apply to all students at Memorial Elementary School:
- All shirts and blouses must cover midriff, back, sides, and all undergarments, including bra straps, at all times;
- See-through or mesh fabrics, spaghetti straps, straps that untie, or halter-tops may not be worn unless they are layered with a top, which itself follows the dress code;
- All trousers, pants, and shorts are not to be rolled at the waist, and must totally cover undergarments, including boxer shorts;
- Dresses, shorts, and skirts must be no shorter than three inches above the knee. Skirts must comply with the dress code regardless of whether tights/leggings are underneath;
- Clothing and footwear traditionally designed as undergarments or sleepwear are not permissible;
- Tight-fitting, or overly-loose clothing may not be worn in school;
- Clothing with obscene or profane language that references drugs, alcohol, tobacco, racism, or violence is not permissible;
- All hats, caps, and hoods, may not be worn in school;
- Footwear must be appropriate for safe participation in all types of school activities and be conducive to a positive learning environment (i.e. no slippers). Flip-flops are not permitted. Backless footwear such as clogs, mules, and sandals are not permissible.
We appreciate your assistance to ensure that our students make the proper clothing choices for school.
