MoASSP Messenger April 10, 2020
Volume 33 Number 26
Dear Colleague,
HAPPY GOOD FRIDAY
Today is a Good Friday like we have never experienced before. As we settle in for this Easter weekend, where we typically gather as families to celebrate this special time of the year, may we find hope and peace. With our limited ability to touch and interact with those we love, we have discovered new ways to touch and interact with our hearts, minds, and souls. In the short term, creating new ways to connect with people just may serve us well when life returns to normal. The last few weeks have forced us to come together in new ways. We've taken on new challenges. We have gone the extra length to make it happen. And, most of all, we understand the "fragile nature of human nature."
MoASSP'S RESPONSE TO COVID-19
If you haven't seen the video on how MoASSP is responding to the needs of principals during the COVID-19 pandemic, take three minutes and a few seconds to watch.
ASSISTANT'S PRINCIPALS WEEK
We have been celebrating our assistant principals this week, and it always takes me back to 1989. That was the year I was named the assistant principal at the Lebanon Junior High School, grades 7-9, with about 1,000 students. I am thankful for those at the LJHS who mentored me along the way as I kicked off my administrative career.
I hope you read the history below on how the APOY got started. It has Missouri roots.
We are most PROUD of Jon Fitzgerald, assistant principal, Pattonville HS. Jon not only was named Missouri APOY but, also was named as a national finalist. NASSP named Wisconsin assistant principal, Debra Paradowski, as the national APOY.
IDEA
MoASSP signed on with other state school leader organizations along with NASSP and NAESP sending a letter to Secretary DeVos today, requesting limited flexibility to the Individuals With Disabilities Act (IDEA) during the COVID-19 crisis. Take a few minutes and read this vital communication.
PHIL LEWIS
I corresponded with Phil this week. Phil and Kathie are doing great. Phil was kind enough to send a heartfelt video message that I have included below. He still has the heart of a principal and loves this Association.
LEGISLATION
Missouri Legislature passes supplemental budget with billions in COVID-19 funding
Time continues to be our friend right now. Use it in ways that will better yourself and your family. Have a GREAT Easter weekend.

A HISTORY LESSON FROM BOB HOWE...ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF THE YEAR AWARD
Did you know that MoASSP was very instrumental in helping establish recognition of assistant principals at the state and national level? Back in the '80s, when Bob Howe was the MASSP Executive Director, he realized assistant principals needed recognition for the critical role they play in schools. He wrote to all the fast-food chains about the concern with students working late on school nights. McDonald's responded. Bob sent a couple of MASSP officers to McDonald's headquarters in Oakbrook, Illinois, three times. NASSP was there too. As Bob says, "We met with the "big boys," and eventually, they said they wanted to do something significant." At the time, Burger King had the Principal of the Year program. Bob and company suggested that McDonald's do something for assistant principals. McDonald's agreed to sponsor a conference for assistant principals, which eventually evolved to the Assistant Principal of the Year award. And now you know, the rest of the story.
