Summer Learning Starts Now
Applications still open
TCS is Prioritizing Summer Learning
Up to 2/3 of the 9th grade achievement gap can be traced to elementary summer learning loss. TCS will make Summer Learning a major part of the work to ensure that every student succeeds. Over the next few years work will focus on "normalizing" summer learning, making participation an assumption for families across town.
Teacher Voice and Choice are Key
Success in several programs the last two years has been built on teacher leadership and input. This year, that approach will be brought to ALL 8 district-lead programs. Teachers will have the opportunity to put their heads together to develop amazing ideas for engagement and organization to make summer learning incredible for students in every program.
TCS is Committed to Summer Learning
Part of City Schools' long-range plan is to build city-wide structures to support a massive expansion of opportunities for students to engage in high-interest, high-impact learning in the summer. The TCS Board of Education has strongly endorsed this plan and signaled its commitment to making summer work FOR learning instead of against it. With your help, we can turn the summer slide into the summer soar.
Still skeptical?
We hear your concerns. Here are some details that may matter to you:
- Program schedules will mirror each other: June 3 - July 12; 8:00 - 3:00; M-F
- Assignments are flexible. You will not be assigned to a location or for dates or times that do not meet your needs.
Director of Special Programs, Andrew Maxey, is charged with leading the system-wide work on Summer Learning. In announcing the approved expansion of this work, Maxey stated that the system will use the same planning process across all programs.
"This means that the best of everything teachers have helped build will not go away," said Maxey. "It's going to be amazing. We need everyone's help!"
