Knightly Update March 7, 2021
Edition Vol 9 Issue 30
Back to back!! That's right, our Speech & Debate team won the AIA Division II State Championship again this year, becoming back to back state champions! Congratulations to all the members of our State Champion Speech & Debate team and to their sponsor Mr. Rumsey. These kids, like all of our students, put forth an extraordinary effort in a very difficult year. I am very proud of all they have done, happy to see their hard work and long hours pay off, and congratulate them on earning the title of State Champions. A list of the students who placed at the state meet is listed in our Knight in the Spotlight section. Congratulations on a job very well done!
Hat's off to StuGo for the work they put forth in coordinating all of last week's homecoming events. They, under the direction of sponsor Mrs. Giberson, did a very nice job putting together a great week. The decorations looked great (the wind certainly wasn't our friend) and it was nice to see our students participating in the daily spirit themes. Congratulations to this year's Homecoming Royalty. It was certainly a fun week. Nice work, everyone.
Best of luck to our girls & boys soccer teams, and to the wrestlers that will be heading to state tournament play in the upcoming days. We look forward to hearing how our teams do in this year's tournament. The girls state wrestling tournament was held this weekend. Special congratulations go out to Christina Chavez who earned a fifth place medal in the 195 weight class. Way to go go Christina. Good luck to the rest of our winter state-bound teams and athletes. Go, KNIGHTS!!
This will be the last update of the quarter. Thank you to everyone for the work they put forth this quarter and for the continued understanding and flexibility with the various instructional methods and mitigations that were put in place. Third quarter grades will be available for students and families to review on Friday via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. I hope you have a fun and safe spring break and enjoy the time off. Have fun, and we'll see you Tuesday, March 23. Take care.
Rob Bickes
Principal

Knights in the Spotlight
Repeat! Congratulations to our ACP Speech and Debate team for winning the 2020-21 AIA Division II State Championship, the second year in a row. The team was coached by Norm Rumsey and Congressional Debate coach, Michael Tyler. Coaches John Zimmerman and Dave Mittel gave after school assistance to our platform speakers and literature interpretation performers. AIA Division II includes high schools under 1,850 students. ACP competed in eight tournaments this year. Six of them were considered open tournaments that included Division I and II. In those open tournaments, our team took 1st place twice and 2nd place three times.
The team began five years ago in 2016 with 8 students and has grown to a team of 67 today. Students compete in multiple events choosing from four types of debate styles, congressional debate, two platform speeches (10-minute memorized speeches) two styles of impromptu speeches and eight different literature interpretation events (dramatically performing play scripts, novels, biographies, poetry and articles in various combinations). Students do extensive research for all events and spend many hours practicing and sharpening their skills.
Speech and Debate is not an afterschool club, although most days one of the groups are meeting. Participants must take the class as an elective. All of the practices and training sessions are run by the veteran upperclassmen. Coach Rumsey says that the key to their success is the culture of serving and helping everyone to get better. The students recognize that when one person wins, we all win.
