LEARNING FOCUSED SHOUT OUTS!!!
Check out some of the AMAZING things your fellow teachers are doing around Scotland County Schools!
Interactive Essential Question: How can origami and science improve our lives?
Dr. Joanne Peterson, the art teacher at Carver Middle School, has done an excellent job with this interactive essential question. Students posted their answers to the EQ all over the EQ poster. This is a great strategy to keep the EQ as the central focus of the lesson as well as bring students back to their original goal.
First Grade Assignment: Using illustrations to describe a story's characters
In Rhonda Brink's first grade classroom at Wagram, students studied about the relationship of illustrations and character’s feelings. Upon completion of studying standard RL.7, 1st grade students completed a final assignment where the teacher provided them with illustrations and the student had to create a writing piece to explain how the characters were feeling!
Concept Based Science Word Wall
In Valerie Campbell's 6th and 7th grade STEM science class at Carver Middle School, current content vocabulary is separated by grade level and concept that students are learning. The words are illustrated by the students to match their meaning and organized under their appropriate concept. This is a great example of a student created word wall that is organized in a way where two different grade levels can access the information they need.
2nd Grade Math Student Work Display: Make a 10 Procedure
At Covington Street Elementary, Shannon Braswell has done a great job posting an exemplary student work wall. Rather than saying "Good Job" or "Excellent," Mrs. Braswell provided the student with specific feedback, "Expert in Make a10 Procedure." When students read this specific feedback, they will know exactly the type of good work that will need to continue.
5th Grade ELA Exemplary Student Work Display
Mrs. Rhonda Jenkins, 5th grade ELA teacher at South Scotland, has done an excellent job giving specific feedback to a student on her Student Work Display. Not only does Mrs. Jenkins give specific feedback, she also writes her stickie note directly to the student. Mrs. Jenkins strategically chose one answer that was exemplary and explained why the student did well in that particular response. This is a great example of how student work can be used as exemplary even when all of the answers are not accurate or perfect.
SHS Math Anchor Chart
Mrs. Mary Locklear, a Math I and II teacher at SHS has done a great job with her anchor chart. The anchor chart shows the different between Joint Variation and Combined Variation with clear steps, illustrations, and explanations. This is a great tool for students to refer to as they learn the process and steps.
Shaw Academy Student Work Display
At Shaw Academy, Ella Gibson's student work display is directly linked to her Standard, Essential Question, and Learning Goal Bulletin Board. The student work directly relates to the posted Standard and EQ. This is a great example of organizing "prime real estate" to provide multiple learning opportunities for students that are connected to a particular standard and essential question.
5th Grade Science Student Work Display
At Laurel Hill Elementary, 5th grade Science teacher Michelle Buhler has done an amazing job with her student work display. She has posted two different experient examples where two students have done a great job writing a hypothesis and conclusion. She cites the specific reason why each experiment write up is so strong. Great job encouraging solid performance across two different pieces of student work associated with the same learning goal!
Exceptional Education Interactive Standard and EQ
At Covington Street Elementary, EC Teacher Lauren Britt has done a great job of turning her teaching standard and essential question into an interactive task. Students post stickie notes that exemplify their understanding of the standard and EQ beside the standard listed on the board. This is a great way to make your standard and EQ come alive for the students!
