Focus on Attendance
It is important that your child be at school on time each day.
- Good attendance is one of the keys to achieving full potential in the learning process.
- Overall attendance is one of four determining factors for our accreditation rating with the Indiana Department of Education.
- School attendance can have an impact on funding.
- Improving attendance is part of SCE's School Improvement Plan.
It is important for our students to be here to learn!
Important SCE Attendance Details:
- SCE's school day is 7:40-2:10.
- SCE car rider drop-off begins at 7:30 and ends by 7:45.
- If no adult staff is outside after 7:40, families must walk students to the Main Office.
- Late arrival is from 7:50-8:40. After 8:40AM, students are considered absent for half a day.
- Please contact SCE about late arrivals and absences before 8:30am. You can call, email azjones@hse.k12.in.us, send a ParentSquare message, or update School Dismissal Manager with absences.
- SDM is for absences and dismissal changes only. Please call or email the Office for late arrivals.
- Always get a doctor's note, and always send the note into school. Thanks!
SCE's website has a link under the heading "How Can We Help?" where you can find the Student Handbooks for all grades. The Elementary Handbook has attendance information on pages 2 and 3. Please contact SCE at 317-915-4270 if you have questions.
Best Buddies is Back!
Best Buddies is the world's largest organization dedicated to ending the social, physical, and economic isolation of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities...And we are lucky enough to have a chapter here at SCE!
If your student is interested in joining our chapter, please fill out the application. We are looking for students, both with and without intellectual and developmental differences, who exhibit characteristics of kindness, patience, understanding, and genuine interest in building authentic friendships.
Inclusion is our top priority in Best Buddies, and we work to promote a broader understanding--and therefore acceptance--of the various differences we have within our student body, both here at SCE and within our community!
Please contact me with any questions you may have. I am looking forward to a great year ahead!
In friendship,
Clarice Nolan, Best Buddies Advisor

It's Time for the Annual Head Lice Awareness Announcement!
From time to time, a case of head lice is reported to the school throughout the year. Fortunately, the odds of your child developing a case of head lice are relatively small. Here is some useful information on head lice and the signs and symptoms.
Head Lice Information:
- Head Lice are small parasitic insects that can be found on the heads of people.
- Head lice feed on human blood several times a day and live close to the human scalp.
- Head lice and head lice nits are found on the scalp, around and behind the ears and near the neckline at the back of the head.
- Head lice cannot fly or jump; they can only crawl.
- Head lice are spread by direct head‐to‐head contact
- Head lice are rarely spread by contact with clothing or personal items (such as combs,
- brushes, hats or coats).
- Head lice are not a sign of uncleanliness.
- Head lice are not known to spread disease.
- Tickling feeling of something moving in the hair.
- Itching, caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse.
- Irritability and difficulty sleeping; head lice are most active in the dark.
- Sores on the head caused by scratching.
Please be aware that we staff members do not disclose the name of the student, name of the teacher nor grade level to other families in order to provide student/family confidentiality. We do ask that if your child does have lice, please notify the school and those individuals/families that your child has been in close contact with.
For more information on head lice and treatment go to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) web site at http://www.cdc.gov
Bullying Prevention Lessons - A Note from Mrs. Jacks
Hello, Sand Creek Families!
Each year, I spend time in your child's classroom completing our Bully Prevention lessons. During the past two weeks, I had the pleasure of completing the first of four lessons in all of our SCE classrooms.
Focus areas include:
- Learning and understanding the definition of bullying.
- Being able to recognize bullying.
- What is bullying vs conflict?
- Action steps to use for bullying and conflict.
- Watching and discussing scenarios.
The Bully Prevention lessons are a part of the Second Step curriculum, so our students are familiar with the format and characters in the lesson. The lessons do build upon each other, and I will be visiting the classrooms again right after Fall Break.
Take a moment and ask your child about the lesson they heard!
Thank you!
Jennifer Jacks
