Ways to Help Children Prepare for the Winter Blues
Shorter days combined with waking up on dark mornings can cause some to experience the winter blues. Here’s how experts recommend preparing for winter.
Prepare for change. The change in seasons can mean changes for your family, such as the daily schedule, habits, and activities. It may mean canceled or delayed school due to weather. What’s your plan if changes occur?
Make a list of cold-weather activities. Outdoor activities with kids can still be enjoyed. Gather as a family and challenge one another to name favorite cold-weather activities—from sledding to scavenger hunts—and then keep the list posted in view.
Commit to time outdoors when possible. Once you have a go-to list of fun and games, commit to spending time outside, even as the temperature drops. Studies show spending more time in nature can provide mental health benefits.
Keep a schedule. As the amount of daylight decreases, it’s important to keep a schedule that reinforces routines. Keeping wake time, bedtime and mealtime consistent helps children maintain their daily rhythm through winter.

Student Handbook: Cell Phones and Watch Phones
We recognize that some families utilize the communication and location tracking features that cell and watch phones provide. At the elementary level, we have guidance around the use of cell and watch phones so they do not impact class time or violate the safety and rights of other students.
The following is information from our Student Handbook regarding cell phones and watch phones:
All cell phones, iPods, cameras and other electronic devices must be turned off and out of sight during the school day, unless under the supervision of a staff member. If a student wears a watch phone, it should not be used for communication, recording, or games. After the second misuse, watch phones will need to be turned off and put in the backpack during the school day.
Students are responsible for personal devices they bring to school. The District shall not be responsible for loss, theft, or destruction of devices brought onto school property. For privacy and security reasons, students are not allowed to photograph or film other students at school.
January Curriculum Highlight - Mystery Science
The Mystery Science Program is designed to captivate the curiosity of students and make learning science an enjoyable adventure. The program employs a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to foster a love for scientific exploration.
Mystery Science offers lessons tailored to each grade level that combine entertaining videos, interactive activities, and thought-provoking questions. One of the highlights of the Program is its emphasis on hands-on experiments. Students have the opportunity to apply scientific principles in a practical and fun way. It has thought-provoking questions and activities, cultivates critical thinking skills, and encourages students to analyze, question, and explore scientific concepts.
The Mystery Science Program is an exciting educational resource that transforms the often complex world of science into a journey of discovery for students. By incorporating interactive lessons, experiments, and age-appropriate content, the program aims to instill a lasting passion for science in our students.
Parents/guardians must be volunteers in order to help in classrooms, eat lunch in the lunchroom with their child, or visit the playground to join their child at recess. The volunteer application is available by clicking the link below.
