Spelling Bee hosted by SCOE
The Shasta County Office of Education (SCOE) is pleased to host the Shasta County Spelling Bee 2024 competition! The spelling bee is open for Shasta County students in grades 4-9.
SCOE will host two county spelling bees:
● Shasta County Elementary Spelling Bee (Grades 4-6) will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at the McLaughlin Theatre at Sequoia Middle School. Check-in begins at 12:30 pm here with the competition beginning promptly at 1:00 pm
● Shasta County Junior High Spelling Bee (Grades 7-9) will be held on Tuesday, March 12, 2024 at the McLaughlin Theatre at Sequoia Middle School. Check-in begins at 12:30 pm with the competition beginning promptly at 1:00 pm
To Qualify for the Spelling Bees: It is up to each school staff to determine how they select their participants for the county bees; any competition a school uses to determine the spellers that will advance to the county bees is acceptable. Schools with students in grades 4, 5 and/or 6 may send two students to the elementary bee and schools with students in grades 7, 8 and/or 9 may send two students to the junior high bee. Schools that have
students in grades 4-8, or any other combination of elementary & junior high grades, may send two students to the elementary bee and two students to the junior high bee.
Winners: Each of the county competitions will have two winners. The Shasta County Elementary Spelling Bee winner will advance to the California State Elementary Spelling Bee on April 27, 2024 in San Joaquin County starting at 7:45 am. The Shasta County Junior High Spelling Bee winner will advance to the California State Junior High Spelling Bee on Saturday, April 27, 2024 in San Joaquin County starting at 1:45 pm.
Participation: Registration is being done solely online. If your school would like to participate in one, or both, of the Shasta County Spelling Bees, please register your students here or visit our website for more information. There is a registration fee of $25.00 per speller. Please note students will not be allowed to compete in the bee unless registration forms and the registration fee have been submitted by Friday, March 4, 2024.
Spelling lists will be available by email request or by visiting https://www.shastacoe.org/families/student-events/shasta-county-spelling-bee If you have any further questions or concerns please contact Melissa Wetzel 530-232-0034 or instructionalservices@shastacoe.org.
Literacy Moment
Children need to have access to a plethora of books. Kelly Gallagher states in his book Readicide that in order for children to develop strong reading habits, "they must be immersed in a book flood" (Gallagher, p.34). Take advantage of our local Redding Library and the Stellar Library. There are also fabulous online audio book programs such as Epic. Our hope is that students become prolific readers for life.
Literacy Note:
Did you know reading helps your brain develop? Reading allows new circuits and connections to be created. As reading skills develop, the connections in the brain become more complex. Try implementing a nightly reading routine to encourage your child to read or listen to a story. Make reading a relaxing activity and enjoy snuggling up with a good book this chilly fall season!
