-First outbreak occurred in Vermont in 1894 with 132 cases
-First clinical description was made in Britain in 1789

How polio is spread
- Contact with the feces of an infected person
- Can live for many weeks
- Droplets from a sneeze or cough
Treatment
- No cure
- Medicines to control symptoms
- Fluids
- Rest until fever drops
- Antibiotics for bacterial infections
- Breathing machine
- Heat / physical therapy to stimulate muscles
