UPDATED VERSION of YESTERDAY'S MESSENGER!
Women's History Month - Spirit Week Themes Update
Women's History Month serves as a time to honor the achievements and contributions that women of all backgrounds have made throughout the history of the world, both by remembering those who paved the way in the struggle for gender equity across the globe, and by recognizing the history-makers and barrier breakers of today.
In an effort to align more with this vision, our JLS SCA Superstars have revisited this week's themes as seen in the image below. We hope that all of our Mustangs will participate in some way!
Thank you for your patience and support, always!

A Message from Dr. Di Nicola
Good evening, JLS Mustang Families!
This past week at Simpson provided us some great opportunities to connect with our Mustangs and celebrate them in a variety of ways. Here are just a few of the successes from March 11 - March 15:
- Our 8th Grade / Select Choir Performers earned straight 1s (highest score possible) at their Choral Assessment this past Thursday, March 14! Way to go, awesome Mustang vocalists!
- We welcomed Frederick Douglass ES on Friday, March 15 for their Rising 6th Grade Visit, led once more by our Sources of Strength Student Leaders. It was a great day to meet our new Mustangs from the world of the FDE Stars!
- JL Simpson held its annual Learning Walk with LCPS division-level leadership, school leaders from around our district, and central office subject-area supervisors/specialists visiting our classrooms. Many of our Mustang Student Leaders kicked off our event by escorting our guests to our welcoming event and talking about their levels of engagement in a variety of activities that cement much of their success both in and out of the classroom at JLS. We received rave reviews from all who attended...and we would like to thank Ms. Kjersti Oliver, Ms. Jennifer Burns, Ms. Laura Bolyard, and Ms. Melinda Maloney, members of our Instructional Leadership Team, for organizing such an exciting, engaging celebration of all of the superb work happening at JLS!
- PI Day (3.14.2024) saw many of our Mustangs participating in cool events in the classroom to celebrate this important mathematical concept...and we even had a trivia question available for our students to earn a surprise from Manhattan Pizza!
Now, on to this week!:
Read Across America!
Students are reading books in advisory and resource in addition to their classes as part of our Read Across America! initiative supported by our wonderful school librarians, Jeannine Everett, Devon Yorkshire, and our library assistant, Charlotte Wholters! The more encouragement you can give your Mustang at home about the importance of reading, the better!
Simpson Stampede to the SOLs for 2024!
We will need your wonderful assistance alongside that of our Mustang Professionals in encouraging our students to perform at their finest potential for our forthcoming Spring End-Of-Course Standards of Learning (SOL) Assessments. Student performance on SOLs at Simpson are highly important in providing us feedback about your Mustang's academic progress and how to best support them in the future both at our school and at the high school level. Collectively, teamwork by all of us as educators and families helps our Mustangs contribute to our VDOE School Quality Profile and accreditation each and every year with their best performance possible.
Many of our students are working to enrich skills both in class and in resource alongside our educators via engaging activities, as well as University Instructors and English / Mathematics Interventionists as part of our All in Virginia Tutoring Initiative. We are also expanding our tutoring program to incorpate Loudoun County HS and Heritage HS National Honor Society Tutors, who will be available to work with many of our Mustangs before school, after school, and during resource blocks in a virtual capacity in a variety of subjects!
Here's a way you can help now!
Lexia®PowerUp Literacy™ is a program that all of our Mustangs are using now in their English classes to focus on word study, comprehension, and decoding skills to maximize reading/literacy skills to the highest potential. If your Mustang has wired headphones, we would encourage you to send them with your student to use in advisory, resource, and classtime to engage in Lexia PowerUp. We also have numerous class sets available for use! Thank you in advance for your assistance!
Women's History Month Spirit Week
Women's History Month continues with a culminating Spirit Week Event for which you can see each theme in the graphic below this opening message. I will send Remind messages each evening so that you can be ready for what theme is coming up each day. Let's rock this celebration in the most spirited fashion possible by supporting our Mustangs' participation! We hope to see our families sporting spirit day selections as well!

Krispy Kreme Doughnut Fundraiser - Doughnuts Will Be Arriving THIS Week!
Our main office administrative assistance staff will contact any Mustang community members who purchased Krispy Kreme Doughnuts as part of our February 2024 fundraiser for pick-up early this week! Thank you for supporting JLS via your heartfelt contributions, whether via purchasing doughnuts or providing a donation...or simply just being a part of our Mustang family!
THANK YOU and Best Wishes, Ms. Kjersti Oliver!
Ms. Kjersti Oliver, one of our assistant principals, serves her final day in her current role this coming Friday, March 22 before she starts her new opportunity as Watson Mountain MS' charter assistant prinicpal on Monday, April 1. Thank you again, Ms. Oliver, for all of your outstanding dedication to our Simpson community over the past six years! We will miss you and wish you the greatest always! Come back to visit us! You're always a member of the Mustang Family!
PS: We will be announcing our new assistant principal soon!
Finally, Quarter 3 comes to an end on Thursday, April 4, 2024. We ask that each of our Mustangs work in an HONORABLE, ENGAGED, RESPECTFUL, and DETERMINED manner alongside the same expectations of our Mustang Professional Staff to ensure that all assignments are completed to maximize achievement at the close of the quarter.
Spring is just around the corner on Tuesday, March 19...so I am sure you are all excited to see the trees replenish themselves with green and flowers blossom in vibrant colors as we welcome warmer weather back to our region! Off to do a long run...and I hope to see you all very soon!

Read Across America Road Rally
March is Read Across America Month
Get lost in a book, and find worlds that you never knew existed.
Studies consistently show that the more a student reads, the better they do in school. This is especially true of pleasure reading. At Simpson, we will be celebrating the joys of reading through a school-wide reading road rally. Students will accumulate miles for every book while advisories compete to see who gets across America fastest. The rally will run through the end of May and there will be prizes and mini-contests along the way.
Please encourage your students to participate, and read along with them at home. Ask them about what they are reading and let them know that reading isn’t just good for learning–it’s fun!
Any questions? Contact Ms. Everett at jeannine.everett@lcps.org

Simpson Awarded Grant for Innovative "Integrating Cooking in History" Initiative
Loudoun County, VA (March 8, 2024): The Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA) is delighted to announce that JL Simpson Middle School has been awarded a grant for its project, "Integrating Cooking in History." This innovative initiative will engage students in history through hands-on cooking experiences. Led by history teachers Jennifer Herrin and Christina White, the project aims to create a more engaging and immersive learning environment. Students will prepare meals from various cultures and eras, gaining a deeper understanding of historical contexts through firsthand exploration of food and flavors. The grant from the VMSA will support the purchase of necessary cooking equipment and ingredients for the program. This project aligns with the association's mission to promote innovative and engaging learning experiences in middle schools. "The 'Integrating Cooking in History' initiative truly embodies the spirit of creative and impactful education," said VMSA President, Dr. Elizabeth Sanders. "This project has the potential to transform the way students learn history, fostering a deeper connection to the subject matter while developing valuable life skills." In addition to exploring diverse cultures and historical periods, the project will also emphasize a focus on the historical contributions of women and people of color. By examining the impact specific individuals and groups have had on food and its history, students will gain a more nuanced understanding of the past. About the Virginia Middle School Association (VMSA): The VMSA is a professional organization dedicated to supporting and promoting excellence in middle school education throughout Virginia. The association provides professional development opportunities, resources, and advocacy for educators working with students in grades 6-8.

No Place For Hate at JLS
No Place for Hate Initiative @Simpson Middle School
Simpson Middle School is joining the No Place for Hate initiative!
Created by the Anti-Defamation League, this program provides lessons, activities, and resources which we will uniquely tailor to meet the needs of our school community. Our goal is to facilitate an environment that helps students to be Honorable, Engaged, Respectful, and Determined each and every day. To meet this goal, our objectives include: implementing strategies that promote school unity, encouraging student voice, celebrating diversity, increasing student-leadership opportunities, and encouraging respect for each member of our school community. Students will participate in learning activities via weekly advisory lessons and quarterly events.
The No Place for Hate Initiative uses its pledge as a focus for students and teachers. The program encourages students to make a commitment to uphold each line. Please see below:
Middle/High School Pledge
• I will seek to gain understanding of those who are different from me.
• I will speak out against prejudice and discrimination.
• I will reach out to support those who are targets of hate.
• I will promote respect for people and help foster a prejudice-free school.
• I believe that one person can make a difference—no person can be an “innocent” bystander when it comes to opposing hate.
• I recognize that respecting individual dignity and promoting intergroup harmony are the
responsibilities of all students.
Escuela Secundaria y Preparatoria
Please be on the lookout for further information about our efforts with No Place For Hate at Simpson! We look forward to your support, as always, as our Mustang Community!

In general, ANY great news!

"If I Were Mayor" - Essay Contest for 7th and 8th Graders
The Town of Leesburg invites local 7th and 8th grade students to enter the Virginia Municipal League’s (VML) “If I Were Mayor” essay contest.
Students are asked to identify a problem within their community, gather feedback from community members, and offer a proposed solution, which must be presented in a typed essay between 300 and 500 words.
Students must live in the Town of Leesburg, which is considered a VML member locality. All entries must be received by end of day on Monday, March 18. Visit https://www.vml.org/Opportunities/Essay-Contest for full details.
Regional winners selected from around the state will each receive a $150 gift card and a plaque. One statewide winner chosen from the regional winners will receive a $250 gift card and a plaque. The runner-up from the region that receives the statewide award will become that region’s winner.
“This is a great opportunity for our local 7th and 8th grade students to imagine themselves as mayor, identify an issue, and problem solve for their community,” said Leesburg Mayor Kelly Burk. “I can't wait to read the great ideas that will come from the essays. If there is a really good idea maybe we can work together.”
Winning essays will be featured in the May issue of VML’s magazine Virginia Town & City.
