HOMER HIGH-lights
Volume 1, Issue 2, December, 2012
Message from the Principal
As we enter into the festive holiday season, it is always a pleasure to see many of our Homer High students preparing to participate in events such as the community Nutcracker and our very own Candlelight, Carols, and Desserts. These annual events demonstrate the creativity and talent we have in our community.
As we enjoy our yearly traditions, we must also not forget the hardships that winter often brings to many of our fellow Homerites. Recently, our students held a school event called Feast or Famine. It was a fundraiser to heighten the awareness of the many children who go hungry each day. Our students will also challenge each other in a grade level competition with their annual canned food drive. Each year, our students demonstrate their willingness to help others with the contribution of hundreds of canned goods that will be donated to our community's local effort to provide food for families going through tough times.
The winter season is a time for giving. Please give of your time, money (if possible), and moral support to help others in our community so they too can enjoy the holiday season.
Happy Holidays,
Allan Gee, Ed. D.
Getting to Know...
With the addition of several new members to our staff, we would like to introduce them to our Homer community. Homer High welcomes Ms. Monica Chi Stockburger.
Monica was born in Sao Paulo, Brasil and immigrated to the US when she was seven. Her family re-located to Los Angeles and, in 5th grade, Monica's dad decided they would only speak English in their home and they would all learn English together.
Monica graduated from UCLA with a BA in Psychology, received her teaching credentials from Cal State University, Los Angeles, and worked in inner Los Angeles prior to moving to AK. She completed 5 years in the Lower Yukon School District working in the villages of Pilot Station, Marshall, and Emmonak and later moved to Fairbanks and completed 15 years before moving to Homer.
This is Monica's second year in Homer and she does not miss the extreme temperatures of Fairbanks. Words cannot express the appreciation she has of the natural beauty surrounding Homer. Monica said she loves her job and enjoys coming to work every day.
In her spare time, Monica travels with her family, reads, takes walks on the beach and spends time with family and friends. She currently hosts an eclectic art group called “Peeps and Devas” and is also attempting to learn to play the viola and violin.
Welcome to Homer High!

"Colors of Homer" Holds Event at Council on the Arts
The Colors of Homer, a Homer High youth-led group with the mission of “providing opportunities for teens to express creative passions”, will be having their first event on Saturday night, December 15th at the Homer Council on the Arts. There will be a variety of art forms and performances from teenagers at this event. This event is open to the public and begins at 7:00 PM. What a great way to see some of the positive avenues Homer’s teens funnel their energy! We have excellent, creative kids so please support them on their first Colors of Homer event!
