Community Based Instruction
Community Based Instruction (CBI)
is designed for students that need intensive instruction in functional and daily living skills. Community Based Instruction (CBI) is educational instruction in naturally occurring community environments providing students “real life experiences”. The goal is to provide a variety of hands on learning opportunities at all age levels to help students acquire the skills to live in the world today. Community is defined as the school, home and city community environments in the location the
student lives. Students with cognitive challenges have difficulty generalizing or transferring information. When instruction is conducted with the actual materials in the natural environment where a functional skill is expected to be performed or the activity would occur, students progress at a greater rate. Concepts and skills that are introduced in the classroom are applied and practiced in natural environments in the community using CBI. CBI experiences allow students to see, hear,
smell and do things in real life settings as opposed to simulated or artificial settings that are very abstract. Doing things in the natural environment is concrete, rein
forcing, and assists in providing educational relevancy for the student. A key to CBI is to offer experiences across settings and time periods to promote generalization.
Community-Based Instruction enhances community inclusion with students without disabilities, employers, family and other community members, ultimately enhancing an individual’s quality of life. Community-based instruction occurs routinely and
must be specifically related to IEP objectives.
Field Trips
Field trips are NOT Community-Based Instruction, and are NOT a legitimate
substitute for systematic instruction in functional, age-appropriate skills in natural settings.
Because they tend to be episodic, one-time activities, student needs for consistency, repeated
practice, and systematic generalization are difficult
to address in the context of a field trip.
Guidelines for Challenging Behaviors
- Contact parent/guardian to see if they are willing to attend the CBI or Field trip
- Have a plan and permission for student to stay back with a staff member or department staff member
- If student has consistent challenging behaviors work with your SSW to include in the behavior plan an explanation and plan for CBIs and Field trips. The parent/guardian must sign agreement to the plan.
Essential Elements with Michigan Range of Complexity
The CCEE documents are Michigan's alternate content standards for ELA and Mathematics (replacing the Extended Grade Level Content Expectations and Extended High School Content Expectations in ELA and Mathematics).
The documents:
-
Assist educators in understanding the links between the general assessment content standards and the Essential Elements.
-
Provide the most current drafts of the Michigan Range of Complexity, which outlines how the skills associated with each target Essential Element (that will be measured as "state assessable") is to be assessed using the three levels of MI-Access.
-
High Range of Complexity will be measured using MI-Access Functional Independence
-
Medium Range of Complexity will be measured using MI-Access Supported Independence
-
Low Range of Complexity will be measured using MI-Access Participation
