Principal's Greeting
As we finish our last 5.5 days of school, I want to share some information that is important for all of our families to know.
First, Wednesday was the last day for students to turn in assignments and teachers submitted their grades today. Students who are being retained were give letters to take home today and a copy of the letter has also been mailed home.
Next week we have a few fun things going on:
- Tuesday is Field Day for our 6th and 7th graders, while our 8th grade students go on their field trip to look for fossils on Folly Beach. Today was the last day for 8th grade students to pay for the field trip. Money and permission forms will not be accepted on Tuesday.
- Wednesday is Awards Day and Field Day for our 8th grade students. As Awards will be a student only event, we are working on a way to stream the Awards, so parents can watch if they are available. If we are able to accomplish this, I will send out a link by Monday night to our 8th grade families.
- Thursday is 8th grade Promotion Rehearsal first thing in the morning. Students will be given their tickets during this rehearsal, so it's important for all 8th grade students to be present at school on Thursday. The promotion ceremony will take place on Thursday evening at 6:30pm at James Island Charter High School in the new gym. We will send a follow up email about parking on Wednesday. Our promoted students will then enjoy their 8th grade dance in the JICHS Cafeteria after the promotion ceremony.
- 8th Grade students who have not turned in their Chromebook, Chromebook chargers, or paid any outstanding fees will not be able to participate in the field trip, awards ceremony, field day, and dance next week. All 8th grade families, with outstanding debts, will be receiving a personalized email from me this week to inform them of what the outstanding debts are and how to pay them.
As we finish out the school year, I want to let all of our families know that if you intend to keep your child(ren) home for any of the last 5.5 days of school, please send a note in advance to Devon Gamble, our data clerk. We will excuse any absences with a parent note. We will work to enter all of these absences in advance. Advanced notice will allow us to enter excused absences into PowerSchool, which will hopefully result in families not receiving attendance calls throughout each school day their children are absent, as we will be taking attendance through the last day of school in every period.
Ms. Rowehl

Mental Health Minute
May is Mental Health Month, and we will be featuring information on Healthy Home Environments from Mental Health America. The following is taken from the MHA Mental Health Month 2023 Toolkit.
CHECK AIR QUALITY
Good air quality can raise oxygen levels in your brain, boosting mood and focus. It’s also associated with reducing the effect of stress hormones and promoting better sleep. While getting fresh air directly from outside is ideal (mostly because of the other benefits of nature), filtered air protects your well-being, too. You can also get a number of similar benefits from the way you breathe.
According to a 2022 literature review, 95% of studies on outdoor air pollution, mental health, and human/animal brains found that exposure to polluted air changes the brain. Of the studies, 73% reported that those exposed to above-average levels of air pollution showed more symptoms
and behaviors associated with mental health challenges.
Many studies on different breath awareness and regulation techniques have found them to reduce symptoms of stress, depression, and PTSD.
WHAT CAN I DO TO BREATHE BETTER?
Check the air quality. Go to airnow.gov to see the air quality in your ZIP code.
Open windows. Let air in as weather allows and if you live in an area with low levels of air pollution.
Use an air purifier. Better indoor air quality and flow can help you think more clearly.
Do some breathing exercises. Try slowly breathing in through your nose for five seconds and out through your mouth for five seconds. The way you breathe has a strong impact on helping you regulate your emotions. Diaphragmatic breathing can improve attention and levels of cortisol (the stress hormone). Visit bit.ly/41PYLHP to find additional breathing exercises.
