Principal's Message
Greetings Spartan Families:
It has been great to have students back on campus now for a couple of weeks. The school year is off to a great start. Our new Family Engagement Coordinator, LeAnn Egnash, will be sending out a monthly newsletter to keep our families informed. Please make sure to take a look as this will be our primary way of communicating important information to families.
Best,

Attendance Matters
Parents or guardians have the right to excuse a student's absence from school, for any or no
reason, by notifying the school of the student’s absence. Parents must call within 24 hours of the absence or it will be considered unexcused. A student may be excused for up to ten days per year under this provision
Wis. Stat § 118.15(3)(c).
More than five unexcused absences in one school semester is considered habitual truancy.
When absences involve a contagious illness, contact the school nurse to report such illness.
COMMONLY USED ABSENCE CODES
Exempt (marked as XMT)
- Physical or mental condition where the student is unable to attend school, with a doctor’s
notify prior to or within 24 hours of the absence. Please note - students who are experiencing COVID 19 symptoms will not be marked XMT unless there is medical documentation of a positive test
- Medical/dental appointment, with an appointment note before the absence is preferred.
- Legal appointment, with documentation.
- School sponsored activities (sporting events during school hours, field trips, etc)
Excused
- Parent/Guardian request for any reason not covered above, for up to 10 days per school
Unverified (UNV)
- After 10 days excused by the parent, all absences (even those that are called in) are considered unexcused. This will be marked UNP (unverified, parent notified). Parents/guardians must notify before the absence or within 24 hours of the absence. These absences may include vacations, illness that does not warrant doctor visit, non-school sponsored sports events, etc.)
- Every 5 tardies is considered one unexcused absence.
Contacting the Attendance Office
If your child will be out ill or will not be attending school on any given day, please contact the attendance office at 715-394-8720 ext41029 and leave a detailed message with your child's student ID number. If you have medical documentation to support the absence, please send the note with your child when they return to school. Notes can also be faxed to 715-394-8760 Attn: Attendance Office, or it can be emailed to elaine.holmberg@superior.k12.wi.us.
Leaving School Early
If you are picking up your child early from school, please call the main office at 715-394-8720 in the morning or with advanced notice so that we may have ample time to get your student their pass to leave the building. This way you can stay in your car when you pick them up, and your child will be ready and waiting.
Homework
Students who are away from school for any reason, may contact their teachers through their Google Classroom to request missing assignments.
Food Service
There will be some changes coming in the new school year. Breakfast and dinner at SHS will continue to be free for all students, but lunch will be paid. We encourage all families to apply for free and reduced lunch. Even if you are not eligible, your application helps our school. You can easily add funds into your student's lunch account through My School Bucks. Click the button below for more information from our district food service including daily menus.
Building Visitors
A friendly reminder regarding our building visitor policy. We want to continue to create a welcoming school environment; however, school safety is our top priority. Entrance to the school is limited.
- Families are asked to remain outside of the school when dropping off and picking up their child.
- Once the school day begins, we use only the main entry doors (N1).
- We ask that if you need to meet with school personnel you contact the school office to schedule an appointment prior to coming to the school.
- Parent engagement is an important aspect to our school environment. As before, please make sure to set up any volunteering in advance with the teacher or school. All volunteers will need to fill out a form through our district, as well as pass a background check. District Volunteer info and the required forms can be found HERE.
- When visiting the school, please ring the call button and clearly identify yourself to our camera. Our receptionist will then let you in the main office. All school visitors must sign in and out of the office and will also need to show ID.
These procedures help reduce traffic in our school allow our front office staff to more closely monitor who is entering the school throughout the day. Thank you for helping to keep our building safe.
