Avilla Elementary Family Newsletter
April 2024
Be Kind Be Safe Be Responsible
Avilla Families,
Welcome to spring break! There is no school for the two weeks spanning March 25 to April 5. We will welcome students back on Monday, April 8. We hope that you have opportunities to enjoy a change of pace from your child(ren)'s typical schedule. Students have had a long stretch of school since winter break. Spring break always brings a sense of renewed energy to finish the school year strong.
You can find a lot of school event and school day pictures online on our Facebook page. Simply search for Avilla Elementary and give us a follow.
Please contact me if you have any questions or feedback for me to consider. Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your child's growth!

Congratulations to Sheri Onion, our Teacher of the Year!
ILEARN Assessments
Students in third, fourth, and fifth grades will be taking our annual state standardized ILEARN assessments beginning the week of April 15, with the majority of testing wrapping up by April 29. All of these grade levels are assessed in reading, writing, and math. Fourth grade takes an additional assessment for science, while fifth graders take a social studies assessment as well. ILEARN aims to assess student academic proficiency and individual growth over time. Our school uses the data collected annually to better plan and target areas of instruction for our entire school.
Office Referral Data
Our school consistently collects data on student academics and behavior. The purpose of collecting data is always to plan for the future. We wanted to share our office behavior referral data for this school year. Teachers and school staff write behavior referrals for a number of reasons if students need to speak with and learn about ways to improve a specific or repeated behavior. Please take a look at the data below. A behavior referral does not always result in any major consequence, but does result in sharing information with parents as another level of support.
KDG 87% have not received a referral;
1st- 73% have not received a referral
2nd-63% have not received a referral
3rd-89% have not received a referral
4th-82% have not received a referral
5th-79% have not received a referral
Overall 80% of students have not received a referral
Overall, 88% of students have received one referral or less
Parents with high expectations and clear communication with school staff are a HUGE factor in our low overall number of students receiving more than one behavior referral. The difference that is made with involving parents and students in our process is tremendous. Thank you all for your support of your child's school behavior, this all starts at home!

Car Line Reminders
Our car line is very long in the morning and afternoon. Our number one priority is student safety. If you are picking up or dropping off your child, please do not park in our lot across the street and walk across to the sidewalk. This creates safety and time issues for our line. We need everyone to join the car line and remain in cars for safety and efficiency. Here are a few tips to keep your time in line shorter:
- Please do not allow your students to leave your car until adult supervision is visible on the sidewalk in the morning. There is no supervision before our doors open.
- Consider joining our line closer to drop off and pick up times. On Mondays our doors open at 8:30 and Tuesday through Friday at 7:45. Arriving in advance will simply lead to waiting in line.
- We dismiss daily at 2:45. Our preschool families need the car line space for their afternoon dismissal.
