March is National Nutrition Month
Nurse Kelley’s Monthly question:
Last month's answer: The heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood a day
Question: Which vitamin is produced in the skin upon exposure to sunlight?
Reminders
Please make sure to turn in ANY updated shot records to Nurse Kelley. 6th graders going into 7th grade will need to have 2 vaccines and they are usually given during 11-year appointments. They are the TDAP booster and meningococcal. Your student will not be able to start 7th grade unless they have both of these vaccines. Please see the attached newsletter for the vaccination letter sent out at the beginning of March to all 6th grade parents.
Allergies
Hopefully we are nearing the end of the cold and flu season! Spring brings warmer weather, and it can also bring allergies. I have listed several symptoms and treatment tips below:
Symptoms include:
● Itchy skin and eyes
● Watery eyes
● Runny nose and Sneezing
● Cough and congestion
Treatment tips:
● Avoid allergens and keep house clean and free of pests
● Wash hands often, cover mouth when sneezing or coughing
● Change clothes when coming in from playing outdoors
● Use over the counter antihistamines and decongestant as directed
● Keep air filters changed and use air purifiers
● Allergy testing and treatment by a doctor
● Take all medications for asthma already prescribed by your doctor to keep asthma under control
Dressing for the Weather
As the weather changes here in Texas, it is important to dress in clothes that match the temperature and conditions outside. Dressing appropriately for different weather conditions impacts our health and comfort
RAINY DAYS: A waterproof jacket or coat is essential. Carry an umbrella and opt for water resistant footwear like rain boots or shoes made of rubber or treated leather. Staying dry in wet weather prevents illnesses like colds and flu, which can be made worse from the dampness. It also reduces the risk of slipping and falling on slippery surfaces.
HOT and SUNNY DAYS: When the sun is shining bright opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. Loose-fitting clothes in light colors help reflect sunlight, keeping you cooler. Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen for protection. Dressing for sunny weather helps prevent heat-related illnesses like heatstroke and dehydration. It also shields your skin from sunburn and reduces the risk of developing skin cancers.
National Nutrition Month
Healthy eating is important at every age. Eat a variety of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy or fortified soy alternatives. When deciding what to eat or drink, choose options that are full of nutrients and limited in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Start with these tips:
● Learn what YOU need: Do you know what foods and what amounts are best for YOU? Get your own personalized MyPlate Plan.
● Eat a variety of foods: Make choices from all food groups – fruits, vegetables, grains, protein foods, and dairy and fortified soy alternatives – every day. Each group provides you with different nutrients and you need all of them.
● Be active: Squeeze in some physical activity between homework, going out, and other activities. Walk the dog, ride your bike with a friend, or do an online workout.
● Keep water handy: Water is a better option than most drink choices. Keep a reusable water bottle in your bag and skip the sugary sodas, fruit drinks, and energy and sports drinks.
● Build strong bones: Get the calcium and vitamin D that your growing bones need! Choose fat-free or low-fat dairy milk, soy milk, and yogurt. You can get vitamin D from sunshine, too!
● Get active in the kitchen: Learn how to make a few dishes. Include extra fruits and vegetables for added flavor and nutrients. For recipes, visit the MyPlate Kitchen.
● The benefits of healthy eating add up over time, bite by bite
