Note from Nurse
We would like to review the head lice policy for CFISD. There's been an increased reporting of lice recently. Students who have an active case of live lice may attend school only after treatment which eliminates all live lice. Head lice do not jump or fly and are most commonly contracted by head-to-head touch (i.e. taking selfies, sharing pillows, and sharing brushes/combs/hats). Head lice are common in school aged children, so parents should routinely monitor children for live lice and teach the avoidance of behaviors that spread lice. Please contact the school nurse, at (281)320-7056, with any questions or concerns.
Please make sure to pick up all medications from the clinic on/before the last day of school, Thursday May 25. Any medications that are not picked up must be discarded. No medications can be left during the summer break. Students are not allowed to transport medications to or from school. Please contact the nurse with any questions at (281)320-7056.
Box Tops Collection Contest

Lost & Found
**** News from the Library ****
The book drive for the CFISD Bookmobile was a huge success! We collected 745 books for PreK thru 2nd graders. These books will be given to children who may not have books in their homes to call their own. Thank you everyone for your generosity!
For School Library Month, many students accepted the #ReadingWithoutWalls Challenge. These students are reading books about characters that don't look or live like them, reading about a new topic, and/or reading books in a format that they don't usually read. This program was created by the Children's Ambassador for Young People's Literature, Gene Luen Yang, to encourage diversity and empathy through reading.
ALL LIBRARY BOOKS ARE DUE MAY 12TH! Please help your child return their books in a timely manner so library inventory of 20,000 books can be completed. If the book is lost or damaged, the book may be paid for with School Cash, check, or cash. Accounts do carry over to the following school year to any CFISD campus. If you have questions or need help, please contact jennifer.lucas@cfisd.net.
CFISD is excited to provide TECHNOLOGY CAMP this summer! This is a 4 day camp June 12-15 and June 19-22 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Labay Middle School for students going into 1st thru 6th grades. The cost is $160 per week (students may do 1 or 2 weeks). Topics covered include coding with Sphero, green screen adaptations, stop motion animation, MaKey MaKey, Scratch, and so much more. Our librarian and Tech Liaison Jennifer Lucas will be a camp counselor! Please register and pay online at the following site: http://www.cfisd.net/en/instructional-technology/tech-camp/

2017-2018 Student Placement
Each year, the teachers, APs, Counselor and I work hard to place every child in a classroom in which they will find great success. Many factors are considered when making this placement, including academic success, student personality and any individual needs specific to a child.
If you have information that you feel is important in helping make this decision, please email or send a letter to your child's Assistant Principal or our Counselor.
Information that is helpful in placing your child includes:
- Personality characteristics of your child
- Personality of the teacher (structured, easy going, etc.)
- Special needs
- History of the child
- Family situations
Due to time and calendar constraints, administrators will not be available for conferences regarding student placement for the 2017-2018 school year.
Please know that we do not take teacher requests for class placement.
Please email one of the following with your information:
*Lorie Gregurek (lorie.gregurek@cfisd.net)
Assistant Principal for LIFE Skills, Kindergarten, First and Third Grades
*Kerry Iselt (kerry.iselt@cfisd.net)
Assistant Principal for PPCD, Pre-K, Second, Fourth and Fifth Grades
*Michelle Erickson (michelle.erickson@cfisd.net)
Counselor

Word of the Month
Our word for this month is “Determination: Deciding it’s worth it to finish what you started.” Staying motivated is a challenge for all of us- especially at this time of year. But finishing strong is one of the ways that you show your determination- and determination can take you a very long way in this world. So, keep your eyes on the “prize” this month, and remember that it is worth it to make it to the finish line and be able to say, “I did it!”
5th Grade Parent Information
To date, two very important forms have been sent home with your child regarding his/her 6th grade year. Elective sheets were sent home on Friday, March 3, and provisional Level-1 letters were sent home in the 3rd grade report cards. If you have not returned one or both of these forms, please make sure to do so as soon as you can. Please contact me at michelle.erickson@cfisd.net if you need a second copy, and I will be glad to send another one home to you. If you received a letter that your child provisionally qualified for Level-1 courses, but have not returned it with a signature, I will not be able to schedule your child in any Level-1 classes. At the end of the 4th nine weeks, a final round of Level-1 letters will be generated and sent home, should any changes need to be made.
Information about Level-1 classes for 6th grade
Level-1 classes are designed to challenge students beyond grade-level academic courses and prepare them for success in future advanced coursework. They are more rigorous and have a more in-depth content focus than on-level classes. Level-1 classes often move at a faster pace, include different types of assignments, including additional outside reading, and may require more independent study skills.
Students are eligible for Level-1 classes in 6th grade (2017-2018 school year) if during their 5th grade year:
1. The student earns a yearly average of 85+ in the on-level class in the same subject level;
or
2. The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Reading test. This makes the student eligible for the Level-1 Language Arts/Reading block and Social Studies; or
3. The student earns Level III-Advanced on the STAAR Science. This makes the student eligible for Level-1 Science;
and
4. The student has parent permission to enroll in the Level-1 class(es).
Students who provisionally qualify for any Level-1 class(es) at the end of the 3rd nine weeks will receive a Level-1 letter. If you and your child choose to participate in any Level-1 subject area, you must sign the form and return it to Michelle Erickson before that placement can made.
***Please note that it is the final end-of-year average that qualifies your child for any individual Level-1 subject. If your child provisionally qualifies in the 3rd nine weeks for a subject(s) area, and that subject drops below the 85 average, your child will no longer qualify for Level-1 in that subject area. On the other hand, if your child’s final average for a specific subject meets the requirement for Level-1, but it did not meet it at the 3rd nine week period, you will be receiving a Level-1 letter for that particular course that your child now qualifies for. You will need to sign that new letter and return it to Michelle Erickson in order for that final placement to be input for your child’s next year’s schedule.
Are you Interested in Becoming a Mentor?
We need you! Are you interested in making a difference in a child’s life? The Cy-Fair Mentor program is a cooperative effort of volunteers from buisnesses, faith-based and/or non-profit organizations, the community, and Cy-Fair ISD designed to encourage students (K-12) to finish school and to focus on future education goals and career choices. A committed mentor can be a wonderful role-model by helping a student with his/her academic and social development.
If you are interested in making a commitment to a child here at Hamilton Elementary, you will first need to attend a district training session at the Berry Center, and complete a mentor application. If you would like to get more information, or to sign up for a training session and access the mentor applications, you can log onto the CFISD website at www.cfisd.net/mentor, or contact Leslie Francis in the Community Engagement Department at leslie.francis@cfisd.net or at 281-894-3950.
