Searching for gold
Gold is a rare shiny yellow metal. It is the only yellow metal found on this planet. Gold is found underground inside rocks and gold can be found in rivers mixed with sand. Many people dig underground mining rocks looking for gold .It was very hard digging for gold .Some people became rich but many didn't.
The Australian gold rush begins
In NSW small amounts of gold were found but the authorities wanted no one to know about the gold. But in the year 1851 a man name Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Bathurst but word spread quickly.
A week later 400 people came digging for gold but in June 2000 people came digging in the goldfields. And the population kept on going and going. Many people from all over the world came to Australia to dig for gold. Many people were Europeans and Chinese. Many people were racist to the Chinese people all because of there skin colour how they are dressed and there religions. But the Chinese weren’t aloud to dig for gold. Then the English government declared that if anyone wants dig for gold then that person must pay thirty shillings a month. But the miners didn't like that.

Conditions on the Goldfields
The conditions on the Goldfields were horrible because there were usually fights , the Chinese people were treated with no respect, the goldfields were usually wet and muddy and many miners steal gold from other miners.But the British soldiers kidnaped the Aboriginals from their tribe. They were kidnaped because the Aboriginals were forced to work in the Goldfields.
The Eureka Stockade
In the year 1854 gold miners rebel at Eureka in Victoria. The miners were protesting at the conditions and the licence. The miners demand that the three miners be pardoned and that the licence will be dropped. The governor didn't like this demand and so the miners burned there licence and displayed there new flag.
Later hundreds of soldiers and police attacked the miners only 4 soldiers were killed in the attack.
