A Message from the Principal...
Dear friends,
With Thanksgiving right around the corner, I want to wish you all a wonderful break. We have accomplished so much together as a staff this year, that it's hard to believe school has only been in session for three months! I have been so impressed with your dedication to supporting our students. From academic supports to fun activities to help build a positive school climate, you have been amazing. Last week our Military Appreciation Luncheon was the best yet. We honored roughly 50 military personnel and their families! It was beautiful to see many service members dressed in uniform enjoying lunch with their kids. In one case, a girl's father was unable to attend because he is currently deployed. So, she invited both of her grandfathers to attend in his place. They are both vets too, and we so grateful that we took time to recognize them. If you did not have a chance to make it to this event, I encourage you to do so next year. It is truly one of a kind and it would not have been possible without our WEB crew (Casey, Megan F., Danielle R. and their WEB students) and Christie Hamilton. My sincere thanks go out to this amazing crew.
Have a great week! I know we are all trying to cram 5 days of work into 4, but the prize at the end of the week will be well worth it. Han in there and finish strong!
Sincerely,

Great American Smoke-Out
On November 15th, smokers are given a challenge to quit for one day. As the trend for our teenagers has shifted away from traditional cigarette smoking to e-cigs/vaping (most notably, Juuling) we are tasked with learning about this new phenomenon. Approximately 30% of our teenagers are vaping on a regular basis and 1 out of 4 started in middle school.
The tobacco company is marketing to teens with over 7,000 enticing flavors. Many of these kids started experimenting with vaping as they thought it was harmless and only flavored water. Unfortunately, that is not the case as most brands contain nicotine; even the ones that say they are nicotine free. They also contain several harmful substances when the liquids are inhaled.
Although we would not like to believe it, some of our students here at TPMS are vaping and yes, some are even vaping in the classroom. Be aware of the students that frequently want to use the restroom, put their head down, have their hand covering their mouth or put their face in their backpack. If you suspect one of your students is vaping, in or out of school, please let me know and I will work with them. My focus is on educating them and not punishing them.
