Mock Crash - It Takes a Village
Prom is an annual celebration symbolic of saying goodbye to your school years, and looking forward to what’s ahead. Sadly, too often, bad decisions can turn what should be a beautiful evening into a heartbreaking tragedy. On Tuesday, our community came together in an attempt to influence our students to make the right decisions, so that they have a fun, safe prom. I would like to thank all of the organizations, both public and private, that donated their time and talents to put together our Mock Crash Event.

Eastlake Police Department

Also, thank you to our North Drama Students for providing riveting performances that created a very emotional and powerful experience. It truly does “Take a Village.” It is reassuring to know that OUR VILLAGE has so many layers of caring adults looking out for our kids.
Fall Athletic Eligibility and FREE Athletic Physicals
In order to be eligible for participating in athletics in the fall, students must pass five classes during the 4th quarter THIS YEAR. Summer school credit DOES NOT impact athletic eligibility. Please make sure to check your student's grades to ensure that they are indeed passing five classes.
Also, any parent wishing to get an athletic physical, free of charge through University Hospitals can do so this summer! Click HERE for more info on registration - space is limited.

End of Course Exams - State Testing at the High School
Each year, in Ohio, students take assessments to measure their progress on the Ohio Content Standards. Students in high school take End of Course Exams in the following subjects.
English Language Arts II
Algebra I
Geometry
Biology
American History
American Government
Beginning in April, students at North will take these assessments. Teachers and students have been working hard all year utilizing the program Restart Readiness, which mirrors the type and rigor of the questions students will encounter on these assessments.
As part of their graduation requirements, students must demonstrate Competency by attaining a minimum score of 684 on the ELA and either Algebra 1 or Geometry tests (failure to do so triggers alternative pathways that we will work through as needed).
In an effort to allow students to focus on these tests without the added anxiety of missing classes, we will utilize a "late-start" testing model. Students who are testing will report at the normal time. Testing will occur between 7:45-9:40 AM. Non-testing students aren't required to be at school until 9:45 AM. Our doors will open at 7:00 AM, and breakfast/busses will run as usual. Any student who needs to arrive at school at the normal time will be supervised in a quiet study hall until the testing window concludes for the day.
North will test on the following days:
April 10 ELA II Part 1
April 12 ELA II Part 2
April 17 Biology Parts 1 & 2
April 19 American History Parts 1& 2, American Government Parts 1 & 2
April 24 Algebra I Part 1
April 26 Algebra I Part 2
May 1 Geometry Parts 1 & 2
Please refer to the North End of Course Exam Letter for more information.
Any student in CCP or Excel TECC has been informed that this qualifies as an excused absence from those classes/programs. Students need to communicate with their teachers ahead of time that they will be absent.
For more info about state testing click HERE.
Final Exam Incentive
In an effort to ensure that students try their best on the End of Course Exams, we are offering an incentive linked to their Final Exams. Students taking an End of Course Exam will have the opportunity to use their performance on the exam in place of a final exam grade. Performance on the EOC Exams would correlate to the following grades:
EOC Performance - Advanced (A on the final exam)
EOC Performance - Accelerated (B on the final exam)
EOC Performance - Proficient (with 684 floor) (C on the final exam)
Students would have the option of taking the final exam if they choose, or they can take the grade that corresponds to their EOC Exam performance. Students who choose the incentive would not need to take the final exam.
As is always the case, students who have 4 A's (an A for each academic quarter) will be exempt from the final exam in that course. A grade of "A" will be entered for the exam grade placeholder in lieu of the exam grade.

The annual Senior Letter was released this week, and emailed directly to parents and guardians of seniors. If you are the parent or guardian of a student who intends to graduate this spring, this letter contains crucial information about the last couple of months of their school experience. Please order yearbooks at jostens.com If you order a book, please double check that your order went through and hold on to your receipts that are emailed once an order is placed. Only students with a pre-ordered book will be guaranteed a copy – last year we sold out, so order today to guarantee your book!

DELIVERY OF YEARBOOKS: If you selected your book to be shipped to your house, they should arrive sometime in early August. These books are received before we get them at school. If you did not opt to have your book sent directly to your house, there will be a distribution day after school begins this fall. IMPORTANT RECURRING INFORMATION
New Crossroads Services
Our partners at Crossroads have made access to Mental Health and Primary Care Services (regardless of ability to pay) for our community easier than ever! We know that many people that support our students are struggling themselves. These resources are available to ANYBODY in our community, child and adult alike. Please see the attached flyers for more details.
There should be NO STIGMA attached to admitting you need help, and proactively seeking it. Our kids need us - and we can't take care of them if we don't take care of ourselves. It takes a village!
WILLOUGHBY POLICE CADET PROGRAM
Our partners at the Willoughby Police Department are excited to offer students interested in careers in law enforcement an opportunity to train for their future right now! Willoughby Police Cadets is a program open to young people ages 14-20. Cadets will work with Officer Ross Shirey on a training program that mixes classroom, field, and volunteer experiences. The ultimate goal of this growing program would be to recommend graduates they could potentially send to the police academy at the department expense! Contact Officer Shirey at 440-953-4227 for more info, or visit wpdcadets.org.
CALENDAR UPDATES
LAKETRAN WE-GO PROGRAM UPDATE
AFTER SCHOOL SUPERVISION/TRANSPORTATION
WE-GO Program
Students are encouraged to go home at the end of the day, and return for the evening event. Students who don't have a ride are encouraged to utilize the WE-GO Program. This allows Willoughby-Eastlake High School Students the opportunity to use Laketran local routes free of charge!
Parents and guardians can give permission to students to ride, students can download the app, and begin riding!
Students can then access the Trip Planner under Rider Tools on the Laketran website. This will give them multiple options with detailed information (what time to leave your house, what bus to get on, what time it will depart/arrive, etc).
This is REALLY easy to do, and learning to utilize our local public transit system is an excellent skill for our students to learn - in and of itself.
If you would like to get your student set up with WE-GO, follow these steps:
1. Complete the Parent Registration Form: HERE
2. Have your student plan their route: HERE
As an example, to go from Lakeshore/Vine to North High School and arrive by 7:00 PM, kids would have a 22 minute ride, and arrive at 6:51 PM.
Calamity Day Info
Please refer to the letter below regarding district policy concerning calamity days.
School Messenger Sign-Up
CHROMEBOOKS
Chromebook Repairs
Students should report broken devices to Mrs. Bouplon in the library immediately. This should be happening in-between periods or at the beginning of a class period only. Hardware repairs only. Software repairs go to Mrs. Medic in room 134.
Students will be issued a loaner device until their original device is repaired. If a student is keeping a device overnight, they will receive a pass indicating so.
Chromebook Loaners
In the event that a student needs to use a device because theirs isn’t charged, they can check one out in the library. Ideally, students will come to school each day with a fully charged device, but things happen. We understand. Repeatedly coming to school without a charged device, or any device altogether will not be permitted.
Loaners must be returned by the end of 8th period, 2:20pm.
An electronic notice is generated and sent via email to both student and parent if a device is being kept overnight or if not returned on time.
ATTENDANCE
All absences, late arrivals and early releases should be reported to the 24-hour attendance line at 440 283-2178. Please allow 30-40 minutes processing time due to high call volume at times. If you have an urgent attendance situation you may call the main office or attendance desk 440-283-2209. Otherwise, please be patient while we process calls. If your child is under the weather, they must go to the clinic. An early release will not be granted unless they leave through the school nurse.
Doctor’s Notes
If your child is absent due to illness or needs to leave due to a dental, medical or counseling appointment, they may turn in the provider's excuse to the attendance desk for an excused medical absence. These documents will prevent your child from being penalized for hours missed, as Ohio House Bill 410 requires us to track attendance hours. Should your child exceed the limit for hours, you will receive a letter, and we can no longer excuse your students' absence unless proper documentation is provided. Please Note - Drivers Education is not an excused absence.
Vacations and College Visits
All students needing time off for vacations or college visits should pick up a form to be signed by staff and guardians. Anything over five days must be approved by the student’s grade level administrator. Failure to report could result in an unexcused absence. These forms can be found in the main office.
Late Arrival
All students should enter the building through the main office upon arrival no matter the circumstance (Tech, CCP, class change, etc). They will be expected to sign in. No student should allow any student into the main doors. They must properly identify themselves at the attendance desk.
Early Release Process
Parents are not required to come in and sign their students in/out. However, we require a documented guardian to authorize the release from the building prior to departure.
Raptor Kiosk System
The district has installed the Raptor Kiosk System to screen visitors in order to secure the building for our students and staff members.
The district has installed a new Raptor kiosk system in the bullpen/vestibule of all main entrances of our buildings. When a visitor is making a first time visit to the school, they will have to check in at the main office first and they must have their driver's license so that it can be scanned into the system and verified. On subsequent visits, visitors check in at the kiosk in the vestibule by scanning their driver's license. They can then report to the main office to receive their visitor's badge.
The kiosks were purchased with Ohio Facilities Construction Commission Safety Grant funds.
SAFE SCHOOLS HELPLINE
Students in the Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools can anonymously report anything that could potentially be harmful or dangerous to any of our staff or students. Students can access the Safe Schools Helpline through the district website HERE. Students are encouraged to say something if they see or hear something. We are all in this together and need to take care of each other.
Students can text the helpline at 614-426-0240, then type TIPS. Students can make a voice call at 800-4-1-VOICE ext. 359 (800-418-6423 ext. 359).
Willoughby-Eastlake Public Library Cards for Students
All Willoughby-Eastlake K-12 students will automatically receive a Willoughby-Eastlake Public library card as part of our community partnership with the public library system. If your child already has a library card, they will not receive a new one.
Cards are being issued for any newly enrolled students on a quarterly basis.
If you have questions about the library card, please contact the W-E Public Library. You may reach them by calling Sarah Vargo, 440-943-2203, or via email: sarah.vargo@welibrary.info.
SCHOOLOGY & POWERSCHOOL
SCHOOL DAY/ARRIVAL/DISMISSAL
The doors at North High School open for students at 7:00 AM M-F. Buses will not allow students to depart buses bound for North prior to 7:00 AM. Please do not drop students off prior to 7:00 AM as they will not be permitted in the building. This creates problems on days we have inclement weather. The school day ends at 2:20 PM. Students not staying after for a supervised club, sport, or activity must exit the building by 3:00 PM. Below is the North bell schedule.
CELL PHONE POLICY
Earlier in the summer the district communicated a change in how cell phones will be handled in the classroom going forward. Now that we are 1 to 1, the need for cell phones in the classroom has drastically decreased. Therefore, we are asking all students to keep their phones silenced and out of sight during class time. During study hall, lunch, or passing time, students will have free access to their phones. However, during academic times it is imperative that students comply with this request. Research has shown the negative effects that social media and cell phones in general have had on student attention spans. It’s time we helped them manage their screen time at school a little better. Please talk with your student about this change, and thank you in advance for your support.
CLINIC INFO
All current seniors will need proof of a meningococcal booster shot (MCV4), unless their first dose was received on or after their 16th birthday. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial illness that affects the brain and the spinal cord. It is spread through saliva and can be contracted by sharing food, drinks or makeup, kissing, sneezing and coughing. Meningitis can cause shock, coma and death within hours of the first symptoms. Please have your student bring a hard copy of their updated vaccine record to the clinic; you may also fax the record to our clinic at: 440-975-3831.
As with all immunization requirements, students who do not provide documentation of these immunizations are subject to exclusion from school, unless proper documentation is submitted to the school in accordance with Ohio Statute 3313.671, which allows for parents or guardians to object to the immunizations--for good cause.
Medications
Any medications (including over the counter medications, prescription medications, inhalers and epi-pens) to be consumed during the school day require a completed medication form. These forms can be found on our website HERE. Along with the completed form, a supply of the medication should be delivered to the clinic.
Clinic Visits
Our clinic utilizes software to document student visits. If your child visits the clinic with a minor issue, you will be notified via email of the visit. For major issues (fever, substantial injury, vomiting, etc.) you will receive a phone call from clinic staff. These protocols are in place to keep you informed of your child’s status during the day!

SCHOOL MEALS
Breakfast and Lunch are served every day at North High School. For the 2023-2024 school year, breakfast is $2.25 and lunch is $3.75. A la cart menu items can be purchased for additional cost. Cash will be accepted, but no change will be given at the register. Change will be credited to student accounts. You can add money to your student’s account at PaySchools Central. Information about PaySchools Central can be found HERE.
All meals include one main entrée and up to 3 total fruit and vegetable sides and a milk. Students may qualify for free or reduced priced meals. Please fill out a paper application and return it to your school or find the online application and instructions HERE.
The Food Services Department ensures that its operations are following the federal guidelines for operating the nutrition program. Federal guidelines prohibit the district’s Food and Nutrition Department from writing off bad debt as a result of charged meals. Please review the Food Services Policy Regarding Meal Accounts.

CONFERENCES
At North, we schedule our parent-teacher conferences at the halfway point of each quarter. The logic behind this is to provide students, parents, and teachers time to develop a plan to improve grades before they are finalized at the end of the quarter. Our conferences are always from 4-8PM. Specific information about conferences will be sent out in a separate message. Our conference dates this year are as follows:
Thursday, September 28th
Tuesday, November 21st
Thursday, February 8th
FOOD DELIVERY SERVICES
Last year we experienced an influx of students attempting to order food delivery services such as Uber Eats or Door Dash to the school. This is NOT PERMITTED. Food deliveries will not be accepted in the office, and any students attempting to open doors for delivery drivers will be suspended. This is a serious safety concern and consequences for violating this policy need to be severe. Parents wishing to drop off food for a special occasion may do so in the main office but we would encourage students to either purchase lunch in the student union or pack their own.
After School Tutoring
Daily Announcements Are Online
Communication is critical at any school, but with over 1,300 students, 100 staff members, and dozens of sports, clubs, and activities it is especially important at North! Each week there are so many events going on, that keeping up with them all can be challenging.
Crossroads Support
END 68 HOURS OF HUNGER
End 68 Hours of Hunger is a national organization with the goal of assisting with food security issues families may encounter from the end of school Friday, until the beginning of the school day Monday morning. For some students, the dependable hot meals served during school are the only ones they can consistently count on.
There should be no stigma attached to asking for help when needed. Our kids need us, and it takes a village! If you would like assistance from this organization please contact Robin Ungar at robin.ungar@weschools.org. She is our guidance staff member who organizes this for our families. Students come down at the end of the day on Fridays and pick up their food items in non-descript, unmarked bags (like giant eagle bags). Some parents prefer to pick theirs up a the end of the day as well. That can be arranged.
