Inquiring Minds @NV
Semester One in Review
ThinkerCreatorTeacherThief!
Nobody wants to reinvent the wheel, right? So let's share tools and strategies for our shared inquiry, research, literacy, and technology skills instead!
Here's a sampling of tools and strategies you can steal from your colleagues from the fall semester. If you want to talk about how to adapt these for your next project area, let's talk!
Present research with infographics
Looking for a new way to present research? Health students used Piktochart to create infographics about personal health and nutrition. Take a look at the resources they used and a student example.
Thoughtful notes with Easybib
Teachers in science, social studies, and health have been using Easybib to help students create accurate citations and take thoughtful notes. Check out the resources and stay tuned for student examples!
Search tools for databases
Searching in databases can be hard, but the "Topic Finder" is an awesome search tool in Gale has helped students in many classes.
WeVideo
Global Studies students made videos in WeVideo, a Chrome app that will be a great tool for us all next year in the era of Chromebooks! Stay tuned for a student example.
Research brief
Looking for a real-world format for a research product? Many NGOs and governmental groups use the brief to convey information and make recommendations...and so can our students. Take a look at Frank's example and these resources students used to prepare their briefs.
Primary sources
Take a look at what 8th graders learn about "Reading Like a Historian" in social studies. Then talk to Kate about how you can incorporate primary sources into your class...she went to a seminar at the Library of Congress this summer!
Website evaluation
8th graders worked on evaluating web sources in science, and Easybib has some helpful resources as well.
Who needs a textbook?
8th graders got to choose from a variety of texts selected by their literacy teachers and librarian. Choice-->more engagement-->increased learning!
Ebooks & audiobooks take NV by storm!
Students are reading more ebooks--we've seen an over 2000% increase in checkouts on our MackinVIA ebooks and audiobooks. Students have accounts, and you can create one using these instructions
Project for Awesome
After reading A Long Walk to Water in English or book club, many students contributed to two video submissions to John and Hank Green's "Project for Awesome" fundraiser. Watch our videos about The Drinkable Book and Water for South Sudan!
PowerPoint Pioneers
Are you sick of text-heavy slide shows? After Katelyn Hockemeyer read Presentation Zen by Garr Reynolds, she realized how boring "death by PowerPoint" presentations are! Take a look at this image-based slide show she made for Earth Science.
