District Quarterly Digital Newsletter ~ 4/2/24
Our District Mission
South Callaway R-II is a school district that produces graduates who enter the adult world as Success Ready citizens. School personnel and parents work together to ensure students become critical thinkers, creative problem solvers, efficient collaborators, and effective communicators.
It Takes a Talented Team to Transport Our Students Safely!
A Note from the Director,
As Director of Transportation I would like to brag about our staff! We had our annual Missouri Highway Patrol Inspection on March 7th, and continued our South Callaway Bulldog tradition by once again earning the Excellent Fleet Award from DESE.
It takes a lot of work and time to go through each bus. It all starts in January, and we work up to the day of inspections. Bryan Haintel and Jim Hager do a tremendous job as our fleet mechanics. We want to thank all the drivers and bus aides for keeping the buses clean, and making sure the guys knew when issues arose.
It’s a great feeling when the inspectors tell you that they like coming here because we keep our buses clean and in excellent condition. South Callaway truly has the best Transportation Department anyone could ask for. Because of you, our Bulldogs travel miles and miles in safety and security!
Michelle Alford,
Director of Transportation
A Solar Eclipse, Changing Legislation, and New Leadership on the Horizon...
From the Superintendent's Desk ...
They say the one constant in life is change and so it is in public education today. Whether we are preparing our students to learn from natural events like the solar eclipse that will take place next Monday afternoon or waiting to find out what will happen as our legislators tackle tough questions in education, we know change is afoot.
That is why I am so please to let you know that our district has been fortunate to be able to promote several highly qualified new leaders to take on key roles for next year. You already know about our own Michelle Alford who was promoted at the beginning of the year to serve in the role of our first female Director of Transportation at South Callaway. Beginning in July, our current Director of Technology Tucker Bartley will step in as the High School Principal following our beloved Heather Helsel who will be retiring this summer. Technology Instructional Specialist Chad Hecktor will replace Mr. Bartley as Director of Technology. We wish them all great success in their new endeavors.
Saying goodbye is always hard, but it is especially so this year as we acknowledge and honor the service of three very important members of our certified staff who have given this district a combined total of 44 years of outstanding service. Together, they have provided a whopping 70 years of combined service to the Missouri Public Education!
We wish them all a wonderful and fulfilling retirement!
Corey Pontius,
Superintendent
Heather Helsel, SCHS Principal

Rusty Creed, SCHS At-Risk Program Director & Teacher
Mr. Rusty Creed is retiring after serving as the Alternative High School director/teacher, coach, and Missouri Options program coordinator for the past 9 years. He has served in Missouri public schools a total of 18 years.
Trudy Kemper, SCR-II Preschool Teacher
Mrs. Trudy Kemper is retiring after serving as first a special education teacher and then preschool teacher. She has served the students of Missouri for a total of 21 years, all at South Callaway R-II Early Childhood Building.
Early Childhood
As we enter the fourth quarter of the school year, it's a perfect time to reflect on the incredible journey we've had so far and to set our sights on finishing the year with a flourish. This year has been nothing short of remarkable, filled with growth, achievements, and unforgettable moments. Together we've embraced challenges, celebrated successes, and nurtured a spirit of curiosity and collaboration.
Throughout the year, our students have shown tremendous growth academically, socially, and emotionally. From mastering new concepts to cultivating valuable friendships, each day has been a step forward in their educational journey. We're immensely proud of their achievements and the dedication they've shown in reaching their goals.
Encouraging your child to continue learning over the summer can be both fun and beneficial for their intellectual development. Here are some ways to help your child continue learning during the summer months:
Visit the Library:
Take regular trips to the library and let your child choose books they are interested in. Many libraries also offer summer reading programs with incentives for reaching reading goals.
Create a Reading Routine:
Set aside time each day for independent reading. Encourage your child to read a variety of materials, including fiction, non-fiction, and magazines.
Explore Nature:
Spend time outdoors exploring nature. Take nature walks, go on hikes, or visit parks. Encourage your child to observe plants, animals, and natural phenomena and discuss what they discover.
Hands-On Learning Activities:
Engage your child in hands-on learning activities such as science experiments, cooking projects, gardening, or arts and crafts. These activities can be both educational and enjoyable.
Educational Trips:
Plan educational outings to museums, zoos, aquariums, historical sites, or science centers. Many of these places offer special exhibits or programs designed for children.
Summer Camps and Workshops:
Look for summer camps, workshops, or classes that focus on your child's interests or areas they want to explore further. There are often options for academic subjects, arts, sports, and more.
Math Games and Puzzles:
Incorporate math into everyday activities by playing games, solving puzzles, or doing math-related crafts. Websites and apps also offer fun math games and challenges.
Family Learning Projects:
Work on a family learning project together, such as building a birdhouse, creating a vegetable garden, or researching a topic of mutual interest. This encourages collaboration and shared learning experiences.
As we embark on the final stretch of the school year, our focus remains on finishing strong. We're committed to providing our students with enriching learning experiences, meaningful opportunities for growth, and unwavering support as they prepare to transition to the next grade level.
Thank you for being an integral part of the South Callaway EC community.
Let's finish the year strong and make the fourth quarter one to remember!

Benefits of Summer Reading
Summer reading is not only a fun activity but also crucial for maintaining and improving your child's reading skills. Here are some reasons why summer reading is important
Helps children maintain their reading skills: Reading regularly during the summer months helps children retain the reading progress they've made during the school year.
Exercises the brain over the summer: Just like physical exercise, regular reading keeps the brain active and prevents summer learning loss.
Prevents summer learning loss: Summer reading programs are effective in preventing the decline in reading skills that often occurs during the summer break.
Improves overall reading skills: Engaging in summer reading can enhance reading comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency, leading to overall improvement in reading skills.
Encourage your child to explore new books and discover the joy of reading this summer!

SC R-II HIGH SCHOOL: GRADES 9-12!
Welcome to All High School Students!
A Note From the Principal
Assessment season is upon us! High school students will have a day set aside for the ACT (American College Testing) and special scheduling days for the EOCs (Missouri End of Course requirements). As the semester winds down each class will have a final project or assessment for course completion.
ACT Day is April 9th
EXEMPT DAY FROM USING YOUR EOC COUPON/ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED
9th grade takes the 8/9 Pre ACT and will hear from SRO
10th grade takes the PreACT and will visit a college campus
11th grade takes the ACT -- dismissed immediately after testing; transportation will be needed 12:30.
12th grade is off campus for job shadowing, college visits or taking the WorkKeys Assessment
End of Course Exams (Biology, Algebra I, English II, Personal Finance)
Tuesday, April 30: Biology & Personal Finance (testing will run from 8:04 am - 10:00 am)
Wednesday, May 1: Algebra I (Part I in the AM and Part II in the PM)
Thursday, May 2: English II (Part I in the AM)
Friday, May 3: English II (Part II in the PM)
Senior Finals will be the week of May 6th and all other finals will be held on May 15, 16, & 17.
The testing schedule is created to provide optimal support for student achievement. Students are provided daily instruction that has helped them prepare for each test they will be taking.
There are many incentives for students to do their best. ACT scores can assist college-bound students admission to college and provide scholarship opportunities. Locally at SCHS, with Proficient or Advanced scores on the EOC students can earn field trip days, and have their names put into a gift card drawing. Final assessments will support the semester grade.
The teaching staff and the administration appreciate your efforts to encourage your student to do their very best to represent their learning and the instruction provided at South Callaway High School.
Best regards,
Heather Helsel,
SCHS Principal
Let's Talk About Technology!
The Technology Department is also excited to announce that Mr. Chad Hecktor will be leading the department into the 24-25 school year and beyond. We are excited to have Mr. Hecktor continue to lead the department with excellence in the coming years.
A reminder for parents and students as the school year starts winding down.
i-Pads and Charger Collection - iPads and Chargers will be collected at the end of the year. This collection will happen during the school day on the last few days of school. If an iPad is not returned, a charge will be issued for the cost of the device.
A Tribute to Military Service Project!
A Digital Graduate Class Composite Board showing each SCHS throughout history is located at the entrance to the gymnasium in the HS Commons. This interactive history of our district is missing something: a record of South Callaway graduates who have served in any branch of the US Military. We are asking for the public’s help in completing our historical display with the addition of:

Teaching & Learning... The SC Way!
Teaching & Learning Happens All Year Long...
It’s April and the school year is only a few short weeks from drawing to an end. It looks like we’ve finally turned in the heavy coats for hoodies and jackets, switched from earmuffs to ball caps, and are reminding each other to check the go-bags for water bottles and sunscreen. There is so much excitement about our spring activities, it’s hard to keep our children motivated to do their best at school until the very last day.
Each of our school buildings try very hard to create a balanced schedule between new learning, fun activities, and required testing in the final days of the school year. Here are a few tips parents can use to help keep students learning until the very end.
Maintain a School Night Routine.
With longer periods of daylight and summer activities beginning, it’s easy to find ourselves having meals later in the day, extending bedtimes, or even allowing a weeknight sleepover that just last month you did not not allow. Yet, morning comes just as early and the next day’s wake-up routines are impacted as well. Sticking to our regular routines ensures students have enough rest and energy to do their best all week long.
Continue to Ask Questions About the School Day.
Every day until the last is a day when your child is being exposed to an important academic or social lesson. Asking open-ended questions can give you valuable insight into how your child is feeling about how school is going for them. Great questions are ones like: “What was your learning target in Science today?” “Did you find any new ways to solve that Math problem we talked about last week?” and “In what way were you a friend to someone else today?”
Recall, Reflect, and Compliment How Much Your Child Has Learned This Year.
Just before a big test, it really helps your child to be reminded how proud you are of them for the effort they have put forth as a student. Each school year is a distinct experience for every child. As this one wraps up, help them focus on celebrating what they have learned and giving their very best effort until the very end. Have your child sit down and compose a message to their younger self - the kid who started school in August. They can write it, record it, or even draw a picture depicting what they got “good at” this school year. Focusing on growth helps take away any anxiety about upcoming exams or worries about what is to come in the next grade level.
Provide Some Incentives, but Don’t Give In Too Early.
Small things along the way such as extra TV time if all the homework is finished are a great way to get through the days. It also helps to have an end-of-the-week incentive like a special meal or a short trip. Just make sure that you don’t allow the reward to come before it is earned. Experts tell us that encouraging students through reasonable amounts of productive struggle can send three very powerful messages.
I believe you CAN.
I have faith that you WILL.
When you DO, you have earned this reward.
Attendance is Still Very Important.
At this time of year, every hour at school makes a big difference. The old saying “you have to be there to get there” is never more true than in April and May. The time to “make it up later” simply goes away. A student who finishes the current grade strong can look forward to beginning the next one in the same way.
Ever Wonder About Our Title Programs?
Here at South Callaway we receive funding for Title 1.A, Title II.A and Title IV!
Title I
South Callaway Early Childhood Learning Center and Elementary School are school-wide Title 1 buildings. Being a Title 1 School means any child attending can receive Title 1 services in reading and/or math. The primary goal of Title 1 is to ensure all students demonstrate at least proficient levels of achievement by providing extra instructional support beyond the regular classroom to help students meet state standards in reading and math. It also provides school-wide programs that engage in strategies to increase the amount and quality of learning time and provide a high-quality curriculum.
Funding for Title I is based on the number of students enrolled in the free and reduced lunch program. Here at South Callaway we use our funding to pay a portion of two teacher’s salaries and benefits.
Title II
The purpose of Title II.A is to increase the student achievement by providing greater access to effective educators. This is achieved primarily through professional development for teachers and school leaders. At South Callaway we pay for teacher professional development using our Title II funds.
Title IV
The purpose of Title IV is to increase student achievement by providing Local Education Agencies (LEAs)funds to offer access for: well-rounded education, a safe and healthy school environment and/or effective use of technology.
Currently at South Callaway we have chosen to use our Title IV funds to pay a portion of our School Resource Officer’s salary.
During the Spring of each school year we conduct program reviews and evaluations. As part of the evaluation process we look at student achievement, and participation satisfaction through parent and teacher surveys, and family engagement.
By conducting a comprehensive evaluation and soliciting input from patrons, we gain valuable insights into the efficacy and impact of your Title programs, ultimately informing future program development and improvement efforts.
If you would like to know more about our Title Programs or have suggestions for improvements, please feel free to contact me anytime. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve your child.
Ways to be a Respectful Spectator at any Sports Facility!
Being a great sports parent means attending your athlete's events whether they are playing at home or away. Here are a few ways to be a welcomed spectator at any district's events.
Plan Ahead for Away Contests: Double check the schedules before you leave. We try to keep most game times consistent, but when we travel those times may be different at other schools. Location of contests is also important as there are some of our opponents that use city fields or parks rather than their school facilities. The best advice is to be in contact with your child’s coach and ask these questions prior to the event.
Model Good Sportsmanship: We want South Callaway to stand out in a positive way! Demonstrate respect for coaches, officials, and opposing players at home AND away events. Your behavior sets an example for your child. Encourage your child to shake hands with opponents, congratulate them on good plays, and accept both victories and losses with grace. I often receive positive feedback from opposing fans, officials and administrators about our coaches, players, and fan behavior.
Follow all Guidelines at Home and Away Events: Every school should have signage around their campus with their district’s guidelines posted. South Callaway has posted signage at the gate for our outdoor events. An example of this would be leaving your pets at home rather than bringing them to events. Most if not all schools including South Callaway do not allow pets on their campus for events. Following districts wishes will help create a more enjoyable experience and environment for all.
Support the Home Team's Booster Efforts: If you have a choice, plan to eat at the facility. Our Booster Clubs and student support organizations work very hard to raise funds for the home team. Supporting this effort is one of the best ways to help. We also need your help in volunteering once or twice a year to work in our concession stands. Each sport team is assigned one to two events per year to cover. Our coaches will be asking for your help to cover their event. It is a great way to earn money for our sports teams and show our students that volunteering is an important part of building community and serving our school.
Leave it better than you found it... Please make sure that you clean up your spectator area when you leave the facility. Reminding your entire party to pick up after themselves not only sets a good example for our children, but also for other fans in the stands.
