Exhibition- Poaching

Reflection 1
Unlike me, most of the people in my group are nervous. I know that we will present on June 2, which is in more than 5 months away from today! I don't get nervous when I think of something that can freak me out, but I do feel nervous when presenting in front of a big group of people. On the other hand, I'm very excited for all of the activities we are going to do: me and my group members will take interview, go somewhere together to learn more about poaching, and even go to each others houses! Doesn't it sound like the best thing that could ever happen to you?
Reflection 2
The Learner Profile I think I demonstrated the most is open-minded. Working in a group always includes teamwork and caring, although there's more to this. It's important not only to care about your group members, but also to be open-minded to them. For example, if your group member didn't finish his task in time, it won't change much if you just say "Oh, no! I'm so sorry for you! Blah-Blah-Blah." It would be way more helpful if you think of some ways to fix this problem in a way the person would be able to complete his task. I demonstrated my open-minded skills when me and my group were choosing the animals to research about specifically. I wanted to do African Lions, although 2 of my group members felt in love with Ontarian turtles. It was hard to chose one animal, so together we decided to look into both of them! That way we will have more information to research about and we're all doing what we wanted to! Other Learner Profile I demonstrated was communicator, one of the most common and popular Learner Profile. I think I succeeded in communicating information with my group clearly and always with great expression. For example, when I was researching about poaching for religious items, I found a good website about plant poaching, which was very helpful to one of my group members who worked on different kinds of poaching.
Reflection 4
I think Exhibition is a unit of IB I did research the most about. My topic, poaching, is one of the hardest topics because it is very common in our society to think poaching is done only for economic causes and money. Well, no. There are way more reasons for poaching: religious totems, medicines, trophies, food, etc. I think I demonstrated my research skills quite well this unit. First of all, I used the advices Miss Brezina gave me and my class in Library classes to use key words when researching instead of full sentences. Also, I had written and organized most of my research by different topics so when I had to write the 2 page report it was easier to find something in the tones of dot jots I made. Another skill I demonstrated is definitely thinking skill. I didn’t simply copy the information the website had on it, I had to rephrase it and make sure I didn’t plagiarize. Another way I showed the thinking skill is by choosing the right websites to get the information from and make sure there reliable. Some of the challenges I had to face is sometimes my group members and I don different information on the same topic. For example, the website I used said that the main reasons for poaching is money, and the website my group member used said it was religion. To solve the conflict, together we found other website on the same topic and they proved who was right.

The attitudes I have displayed the most are creativity and empathy. What kind of artist doesn’t need creativity? At first, my group and I though of a simple idea Ms. Butterfield gave to us, but then, we decided to use our creative brain and come up with an idea on out own! I have displayed empathy by choosing the art component. To make people be engaged with the game, I had to come up with a way to make them feel bad for the animals, so they’d play the game and learn about ways to help. I had also demonstrated empathy to my group members. The day before the board game was due, a person from my group lost the game pieces and contacted me in order to ask if I can help someway. Using creativity, I found a monopoly in my house, and with empathy, I helped a friend!

Reflection 9
Since there were 2 presentation in the same time, I didn't see all of hem, but I did see two other groups presenting their Oral component! The key words I can recall from the Littering group's presentation are the Green Bin (where the food waste goes) and the Blue Bin (where paper and plastic goes). From the Antibiotics group, I remember words such as Antibiotics, and I also phrases like, "To make sure you don't get sick, keep your hand away from your face, wash your hands, cough and sneeze in your elbow", "Antibiotic means life-killing in Greek, because prefix anti is opposite, and bios is life." There's still a question I have wondered about. The green bin is called so because it has foods wastes, which is usually food that was planted and grown in the land, and nature (land) is usually associated with color green. But why is the Blue Bin called the way it is? Is it because one of the components plastic is made out of is blue? I would rather make it the White Bin because everything that goes there is recycling and the items there can be anything after they are recycled. Basically, they are starting a new life from a new page that is a blank (so the page is completely white!).
