PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear FSA Family, Friends, and Supporters...
It's been another whirlwind week! In response to requests from many of our wonderful families, we have re-organized our newsletter this week, placing our newest stories at the top, with previously written content that is still applicable to our FSA family appearing at the bottom.
I'd like to share the following highlights with you:
- Back by popular demand, we look forward to welcoming Dr. Spomenka Newman tomorrow, Tuesday, January 31, at 6 p.m. This parent panel will explore the foundations of giftedness. There is no fee to attend and details can be found below in our newsletter.
- Re-Enrollment forms for the 2017/2018 school year have been sent home with students and were xeroxed on yellow paper. Hard copies are available at the front desk should you wish to obtain another copy. Our deadline for re-enrollment is February 6. After that date, available slots will be filled by others who are interested in attending FSAPS next year.
- Our Environmental Club, a new addition to FSA, is now open to students in grades 5-10. Please see details about how to join the club below.
- Wrestling Club is now up and running on Mondays for students in grades 3-8.
- This Friday, students and faculty are invited to dress down for FSA's "Football Friday." If you are a Falcons fan, please wear Falcons attire (or red and black). Or, if you prefer another team (Including the Patriots!), please feel free to wear that, instead, (this is all optional).
- The extended deadline for our STEAM Video Contest is rapidly approaching. Please see specific notes on this exciting contest below.
- I would like to extend good luck and best wishes to our MUN team as they head to Statesboro to compete in the 46th Annual Georgia Southern HS Model UN Conference.
- Best wishes also go out to our eighth-grade female robotics team, "Control Alt Delete" as they compete in the State competition this Saturday.
As always, I thank you for your ongoing support of FSA and for sharing your precious students with us.
Gratefully,
Kenan Sener

Motivational Quote of the Week
Science Olympiad traveled to Dayton, Ohio last weekend to compete in the Wright State Invitational
Congratulations to FSA's Science Olympiad Team who traveled to Dayton, Ohio, this past weekend to compete in the Wright State Invitational.
The team left Thursday afternoon, traveling by bus. The eight-hour journey allowed plenty of time for “Charter Bus Super Studies” as students took advantage of the bus' wi-fi and USB outlets to study with their partners and put the finishing touches on their event binders and resource sheets.
Friday morning, the team took a few hours to enjoy the National Museum of the US Air Force near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Students got to walk through former Air Force One planes, tour a Space Shuttle mock-up that was used to train astronauts, view the B-2 bomber, ride various air force simulators, and explore some virtual reality scenarios.
Friday afternoon it was back to business as students toured Wright State University to find the locations of their events. Students were pleased to discover the University’s tunnel system which allowed them to travel between most buildings on campus without having to go outside. Following dinner, students held a final tournament prep session in the hotel conference room.
Saturday’s competition began at 7 a.m. and went through 3:30 PM. Coaches raced students around the campus trying to get them to their events with the devices and materials they needed for the tournament.
“We had smaller teams than allowed by Science Olympiad rules, so many of our students had events during nearly every time slot,” explained head coach Gloria Stathos. “There wasn’t always time for students to return to home base, so we were meeting in between events to get them the materials they needed. Also, for the first time, we brought a small team of high schoolers with us. Their events have an entirely different schedule. It was hectic but exhilarating!”
Head Coaches Pam Walsh and Gloria Stathos were pleasantly surprised with the tournament results.
“We, and a lot of teams, selected this tournament because Wright State is hosting the National Tournament this year,” explained head coach Pam Walsh. “There were 120 middle and high school teams from over a dozen states, including many of the top teams in the nation. Our middle school team placed 14th overall. Participating in a tournament of this size and at this venue will provide great preparation if we do qualify for the National Tournament.”
Walsh continued, “We were impressed with the students who competed for our high school team. We only had seven ninth and tenth grade students on that team and they managed to cover 15 of the 23 events. And, after a day of test-taking, the high schoolers were still ready for a lively AP Bio study session with Mr. Shealy on Saturday evening and again on the bus during our return trip,” said Mrs. Stathos.
The following students earned awards in these events:
Reach for the Stars – coached by Mrs. Walsh
1st Place – Jay and Holden
Write It, Do It – coached by Mrs. Stathos
1st Place – Sophie and Vihan
Ecology – coached by Mrs. Butler

School-wide Spelling Bee Results
Last Tuesday, January 24th, students ranging from 3rd to 8th grade competed in the school-wide Spelling Bee. After more than two hours of competition, Arul S. (8th grade) won the Bee. He will be representing FSA along with Navina D. (7th grade), who placed second, at the district Bee on February 9th.
Fatima S. (7th grade) came in third place, and Edgar R. (7th grade) placed fourth. These students will act as alternates in case the champions are unable to make it to district. Other School-wide participates included, Shourya J., Holden W., Tushar K., and Jaeden A. from 8th grade; Spiros K., Ashi J., Ashika S., Waleed A., and Abhi G. from 7th grade; Eli R., Lakshya J., and Ranjani V. from 6th grade; Varsha S., Shreshta G., and Epsi B. from 5th grade; Karthic K. and Sanjna A.from 4th grade, and Annemarie A. from 3rd grade.
Congratulations to each of these students for representing their classes at the 2017 FSA School-wide Bee. Best of luck to our representatives at district!
Middle School Geography Bee Results
The FSAPS Social Studies Department held its 14th annual school-wide National Geographic Geography Bee on Wednesday, January 25th. We had a number of qualifiers for the Bee representing students in the 4th through 8th grades, which moved through several preliminary rounds before settling on our finalists.
The championship round was the most heated, taking five rounds before 7th grader, Shivam Jain, eventually prevailed over the other competitors.
Shivam cruised through the preliminary and championship rounds and then faced off against last year’s winner, 8th grader, Arul S, in the final round. In the finals, Shivam kept up his momentum by answering each of his questions correctly, missing not one single question throughout the entire competition from the class bee all the way through to his eventual championship-winning answer.
Shivam will complete a qualifying test for the chance to represent FSAPS in the state Geography Bee on March 31st. Potentially, he could also potentially advance to the national championship in Washington, DC, in May.
Thanks again to all of our competitors and good luck to Shivam!
Results:
1st Place: 7th grader Shivam J.
2nd Place: 8th grader Arul S.
3rd Place: 8th grader Rithvik K.

Sensitivity, Intensity, and Perfectionism:
Foundations of Gifted Personality
Tuesday, January 31, 2016 - 6 p.m.
by Spomenka Newman, Ph.D., Ph.D.
Back by popular demand, FSAPS is thrilled to welcome Dr. Spomenka Newman, who will present a free lecture to parents Tuesday evening. This session will focus on the nonacademic and nonintellectual aspects of giftedness.
The uniqueness of gifted children is often defined by three characteristics that make their experiences different from an early age: sensitivity, intensity, and perfectionism. In addition to advanced intelligence and knowledge, gifted children have the capacity to feel more deeply earlier than their peers; they process experiences with greater emotional sensitivity; they experience life with seriousness and themselves with greater complexity; they have a stronger drive to succeed, and they focus their energies in pursuit of excellence earlier.
When these characteristics intersect in the life of a child, such as in pursuit of a goal that requires competitiveness, they can create inner conflicts.
How to maintain a friendship when you win and your friend loses? How do you collaborate with others when your personal ideas are being rejected? How do you hold onto what is ethically right when the focus is on winning? How do you be your best in a school with so many other capable children? How do you deal with not being the best when being the best is expected of you? How do you deal with your own anxiety when so much depends on the outcome of a competition and when so many are relying on you? How do you remain kind and fair in your pursuit of excellence? How do you remain compassionate toward those who are not as good as you are? How do you cope with personal disappointments? How do you deal with public embarrassment? How do you deal with guilt and anger?
When such complex questions are asked by children or young adolescents who are still developing morally and emotionally, and who have little life experience to fall back on, such questions may become a source of disquietude and anguish.
Sensitivity, intensity, and perfectionism add both complexity and vulnerability to the lives of gifted children. I will be speaking about dilemmas and values that pose a potential for emotional and ethical conflicts, especially as they relate to competitiveness.
These dilemmas are at the core of what needs to be dealt with in pursuit of not only knowledge and academic success, but also the development of personal ethics and goodness. When we guide a child, we are shaping the future. Ultimately, today’s dilemmas will shape not only the individual personality but also contribute to shaping the personality of our future society. What do we want that future to be?
The extent of joy it is possible to experience is directly related to the intensity of the struggle in which one is engaged to reach his or her goal.

CLINIC Update - Please Keep Children Home if Showing Any Symptoms of Illness
Our clinic has been extremely busy during the past week with students displaying a variety of symptoms and illness. Isolated cases of the flu have been confirmed in our elementary school, and children are also complaining of symptoms associated with strep throat, seasonal colds, and GI illness.
As you can imagine, the health and safety of our students is our primary concern. To avoid the spread of germs, and The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that your child stays home if he/she is unable to participate in normal school activities, the illness causes an unsafe or unhealthy place for others at school, or when the child requires care that cannot be managed at school.
As a rule of thumb, a child should stay home if he/she has:
- A fever of 101 F orally, or 99ax, or higher (we ask that students are fever free for at least a full day before returning to school)
- Vomited more than once (a child should not return to school until at least 24 hours has passed since vomiting)
- Diarrhea
- A frequent cough
- Persistent pain (ear, stomach, etc.)
- A widespread rash
There are also many bacterial/infectious diseases that require a child to remain home from school for a period of time. Examples include strep throat, pink eye, chickenpox, mumps, mono, and whooping cough (pertussis).
Please check with FSAPS first before sending your child to school if he/she has had any of the above symptoms. Many diseases are preventable by vaccination including influenza (flu).
For more information refer to FSAPS Handbook (Page 22-24). Please feel free to contact the school office if any questions or concerns. Thank you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Vickie Decuir, School Nurse

Middle and High School Students to See "Hidden Figures" on February 9
The movie features the incredible untold story of Katherine G. Johnson, Dorothy Vaughan and Mary Jackson. These brilliant African-American women worked at NASA and served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit. This stunning achievement restored the nation's confidence, turned around the Space Race, and galvanized the world. The visionary trio crossed all gender and race lines to inspire generations to dream big.
Please return the Field Trip form sent home last week or stop by the front desk for a new one! The deadline is Monday, February 6.

club updates
Third-Fifth Grade Theater Club
All the Theater Club members did a wonderful job of creating humorous, creative, and innovative stories. Next week, we will continue our puppetry study to learn about string puppets.
IPAD Music Club
Every week, students are incorporating and re-enforcing new music fundamentals in an "out of the box" learning approach enjoyed during FSA's "IPAD Music Club"
So far, students have worked together to help solve an orchestra scavenger hunt online, thanks to a music education website. The “hunt” provided students with clues to help solve problems that the musicians were having. The hunt also helped students review musical terminology that they learned in music class as well as in the club.
Students have also been working with several apps to create a variety of different styles of music. They have been working in groups of 2-3 participants, brainstorming, creating and motivating one another to compose/arrange musical works.
Students are having a blast!
Environmental/Conservation Club Provides Exciting After-School Option for Students
Are you interested in conserving our environment? Would you like to learn more about land preservation, nature, and preserving our ecosystems? If so, the Environmental/Conservation Club is for you!
Thanks to a generous gift from the Novak Family Foundation, a new club has been added on Tuesday afternoons for 5-10th graders. Projected activities for this semester include:
- Certifying our school as a National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitat
- Having students trained and certified in Chemical Water Quality Testing through Adopt-A-Stream
- Planting trees on our school campus
- Creating Pollinator garden/Butterfly Waystation
- Environmental speakers
- Environmental Discussions, Activities, and Experiments
- Conducting a Bioblitz on our school campus
The only thing we are missing is YOU! Please come join us!

Checks and order forms are due by February 3 and orders should be delivered by early March. Many thanks to FSAPS mom, Lillie Pozatek, and the MSO, for providing such fun spirit wear options, including a new "ladies cut" shirt. We can't wait to see these shirts in our hallways this spring!
STEAM Video Contest Deadline Approaches
In response to several requests, we are extending our submission deadline until Sunday, February 5, 2017. After this date, no additional extensions will be available.
The red carpet awards program will now take place on Thursday, February 16, at 1:45 p.m. Parents are welcomed and encouraged to attend this memorable experience.
We recognize that the past few weeks have been hectic with numerous projects and academic competitions. Many of our students who love video editing and production were unable to work on their video projects due to academic commitments which understandably took precedence.
While we realize that this participation in this STEAM Video Competition is entirely voluntary, there are many benefits to submitting an entry, including:
1. Cash prizes for winning entries;
2. Priority seating in a VIP section of audience;
3. Semi-formal attire on the ceremony day (optional);
4. Interviews streamed live from the red carpet on FSA's social media sites;
5. Personalized photo opps with our surprise celebrity emcee;
6. Inclusion of your body of work in an external press release sent to local media, including film and casting companies;
7. Two dress down days before the event; and
8. A finished product that can be considered portfolio material for college applications, etc.
To those students who have already submitted...THANK YOU! We have been so impressed with your work! While no further action is necessary, you are free to use this additional time to make any production modifications or improvements to your work, if you so choose.
In closing, I hope it goes without saying that we LOVE watching the creative minds of our wonderful students unfold through voluntary and exciting projects such as this one. We look forward to welcoming additional entries in the coming weeks and hope we can count on seeing you at the awards show.
As always, please feel free to email me directly (ksener@fultonscienceacademy.org) with questions, comments, or concerns.
Would you like to coordinate a home visit? If so, please read on...
Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.
Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.
Six Flags rEAD TO sUCCEED - 2017
If your child is in Kindergarten through 6th grade, they are invited to participate in the "Six Flags' Read to Succeed Program!" This is a fun incentive to get kids to read.
Students need to record and log their reading over the next two months. If they submit a log with 6 hours of reading on it by Friday, February 24, 2016, they will receive one free ticket to Six Flags Over Georgia! Logs for Read to Succeed went home with students on Friday, January 13.
Considerations include:
- Only students in grades K through 6 are eligible to participate;
- Review the reading log provided by your child's language arts teacher. Your child should use this sheet to record what and how long he/she reads;
- Your child must complete 6 hours (360 minutes) of recreational reading;
- Please initial each entry and then sign the reading log to verify that the 6 hours of reading has been completed;
- Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books (digital or hard copy). Reading for homework or a class assignment does NOT count!
- Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult - you can read to your child, or your child can read to you;
- Remind your child to return the reading log to his/her language arts teacher by Friday, February 24, 2016. Your child's teacher will submit your child's information and minutes read;
- Late entries will NOT be accepted.
Happy reading!
