From the Principals
Hello Falcon Families,
We hope you and your family are healthy as you engage in remote learning this week. We have great news! Both iReady Reading and Math will remain available to your scholars until mid-August. This is such a useful tool to keep developing academic skills. We recommend that scholars complete 20 minutes of iReady Reading, and 20 minutes of iReady Math in addition to their 20 minutes of reading, each day during the summer to keep up the skills they have learned.
8th grade News:
- Our staff is working on creating a virtual 8th grade promotion event to celebrate this important milestone. Be prepared to see fun(ny) pictures of Lakota Staff in their younger years. The date of the event will be communicated to you soon!
- Looking ahead to high school, students will have the choice of up to 4 electives, each semester. In 9th grade, students will be required to take either AVID or College and Career Prep. If college is your goal, we encourage you to apply for AVID so that your college dreams can continue to be supported throughout your entire high school career. Please see the AVID letter to incoming 9th graders attached to the bottom of this newsletter.
The quote below is from Carol Dweck. She is a researcher best known for her work on growth mindset. It is such a good reminder that this time is presenting unique challenges and therefore many opportunities to learn for all of us. Keep engaging! Enjoy the effort you are putting into all of the new learning you are experiencing.

Success Strategy: Envision the Future
Hello, Lakota Scholars and Caring Adults -
Several years ago, the State of Washington established a graduation requirement for all students called the High School and Beyond Plan (HSBP). Each plan is personalized and designed to help students set, visualize, and work to achieve goals. The students begin their HSBPs in the 6th grade and continue to build upon them each year through 12th grade.
In Federal Way Public Schools, students complete their High School and Beyond Plans through an online college and career exploration program called MaiaLearning. Every FWPS student has an account, and login information is provided below.
Three really cool features of MaiaLearning are interest inventories, and personality profiles, and the personal portfolio.
Interest inventories help you narrow down what types of activities you like to do and then can help match those interests to potential careers.
Personality profiles provide a way to explore your own personality, strengths, and work preferences. It helps you figure out how you work best with others and how others can work well with you.
- The personal portfolio is complete by the scholar’s senior year of high school, and they will submit and present it as a step to graduation. Graduates can keep accessing their portfolios for up to four years after high school by logging into their MaiaLearning accounts! This way, they can keep using it as they build their résumés and continue towards their college and career goals.
At this point, you do NOT need to have a clear vision of “who you’ll be when you grow up.” Middle school is way too young for that! Very, very few people “know” as young people/teens exactly what they will do after high school, exactly what college or trade school they’ll go to, or exactly what their first career will be. (And for the people who think they know, they most often change their minds!) The important thing at this point is to practice planning for your adult life so that you develop a vision of yourself as the kind of person who plans for their future, the kind of person who designs their adulthood, the kind of person who has goals worth working hard for.
In middle school, a few of the MaiaLearning activities are the Career Interest Profiler, SMART Goals, middle school surveys. At Lakota this year, 8th graders followed up on their Career Interest Profiler by saving a few possible careers as “favorites” in their MaiaLearning accounts.
MaiaLearning can be a great resource for students and their adults! We have a few suggested activities to help you familiarize yourselves with what the program has to offer.
First Activity: Log into MaiaLearning
Second Activity: High School & Beyond Plan Scavenger Hunt
1) What educational level do you need to become an Art Therapist? (Hint….start by clicking on “Career Plan” and then “Career Search.”)
2) What are two careers that you might enjoy based on your current interest profile? (Hint… start by clicking on “Explore” and then “Interest Profiler.”)
3) What are three scholarships you qualify for? (Hint… start by clicking on “Scholarships” and then “Scholarship Search.”)
Happy exploring!
We believe in you!
