Event Crisis Drill Reflection
For those of you that didn't see the drill here is a summary - a set of parents are having an argument during a grade-level program dress rehearsal. Julie and Kelley are not in the gym. What do you do?
It is important to note that some "crisis" situations do not actually involve a life-threatening situation. Sometimes it involves an uncomfortable situation. For this drill, no weapons or direct threats were involved.
It was great to hear so many of you consider different ways to approach this situation:
- step 1 - since we already knew Julie and Kelley were in the DR - send one adult to the DR to get at least one of them to come to the gym. Have another adult stop at the office so they can call Officer Mo
- step 2 - have a couple of adults approach the parents and ask them to move their discussion to the office (at the very least in such a situation, the parents are in their own crisis mode and may not even be aware of their behavior and the situation it is creating. Just approaching them would hopefully pause the behavior)
- step 3 - return focus to the students and the concert
- step 4 - if the situation escalates it would be necessary to move our students out of the gym
As always, there is no such thing as a perfect answer. In every crisis, we make the best decision we can with the information we have and we move forward.
In this particular drill, we shared that both Kelley and Julie were preoccupied. On some occasions, this is a reality. As a school that believes that All Kids Are Our Kids, we appreciate the fact that in these situations, our staff steps up and supports each other, our community, and all our kids. Together we make CCE a great school for every child!
