Nixon-Smiley DAEP
Alternative Center
What an amazing start to the school year. As a Co-Op of eight districts, we would like to take the time to share with you the great things that are taking place on our campus. This allows you to see, read, and understand what we are doing for your/our students when you place them on our campus. We hope to provide you quarterly with information, updates, data, achievements, and personal stories that students have shared. Our hope is for you to have this and know that your students are supported. We provide on this campus a high level of discipline, structure, academics, computer based programs, physical training, and social skills which we hope provides the students that you send the changes that they need to make in their lives. We want the foundation here at DAEP to lay the groundwork for a lifetime of success. We strive for excellence as well as personal development through high expectations academically and behaviorally.

Program of Accelerated Education (PACE) - NEW PROGRAM
The Program of Accelerated Education (PACE) exists in the Nixon-Smiley CISD Alternative Center to serve students who have been identified as “at risk.” At PACE, this refers to any student who, by virtue of his/her circumstances, is statistically more likely than others to not graduate from high school.
The program was developed for students who have, for a variety of reasons, had difficulty making progress in a traditional comprehensive high school. Teachers focus on each individual student and assist each in developing a plan for graduation. Most of the courses at PACE are delivered online using a computer-based curriculum APEX and Edmentum. Teachers assist students to be better organized, demonstrate improved study habits, learn to understand the importance of dedicated effort, and become more resilient to the stressors of adolescent life.
A variety of support services are used to help students develop and demonstrate self-responsibility, applied academic knowledge and skills, appropriate behavior, and post-secondary career readiness resulting in high school graduation. The PACE Program is a minimum competency graduation program which provides a core curriculum and a wide selection of electives available to allow students to complete the requirements for graduation in the State of Texas. The basic foundation of the program is the concept of individualized and effective learning. Certified teachers will assist students and provide support as they work through their classes. The PACE program fosters an environment that will ensure a climate of openness and respect.

SOLVING THE CHALLENGE…
Teachers can’t always control what comes into their classrooms. Capturing Kids Hearts shows them how to create high-achieving centers of learning by strengthening students’ connectedness to others through enhancing healthy bonds with their teachers and establishing collaborative agreements of acceptable behavior.
Capturing Kids Hearts is a process that is working in thousands of classrooms across the country to provide the strategy and training for teachers and administrators to achieve success in today’s classrooms.
STUDENT OUTCOMES
- Strengthen student connectedness to others by enhancing healthy bonds with teachers.
- Consistent rules of conduct with reduced disciplinary escalations and referrals.
- Dramatic reduction in truancy and dropouts.
- Reduction of negative behaviors such as isolation, violence, early sexuality, and substance use.
- Significant improvement in student academic performance.
- District-wide improvements in test scores.
- Higher rate of job satisfaction among teachers.
- Increased teacher retention and improvement in teacher recruiting.
APPROACH
Capturing Kids Hearts is an immersive, participatory experience. Teachers, staff, and administrators learn and practice skills they will use and model in their classrooms, schools, and districts, including:
- How to build meaningful, productive relationships with every student and every colleague.
- How to use the EXCEL Model of teaching to create a safe, effective environment for learning.
- How to develop self-managing, high-performing classrooms using team-building skills and a Social Contract.
- High payoff techniques for dealing with conflict, negative behavior, and disrespect issues.
Capturing Kids Hearts is the beginning of a transformational, multi-year process for teachers and administrators at the campus or district level.
