BEING REALISTIC IS MOST HELPFUL
The start of a school year can be a time of new beginnings and great excitement. But for some kids, that's not exactly how they see it.
“Kids who have struggled in the past, especially those with learning, mental health, or social issues, often feel more anxious than excited about heading back to school”, explains Rae Jacobson at the Child Mind Institute. Jacobson notes that being realistic about your child’s concerns about starting the new school year is more helpful than a “. . . song and dance about how amazing school will be”.
Jacobson offers more tips and guidance on the transition to back-to-school for your child in her recent Child Mind Institute article: Talking to Kids About Back-to-School Worries.
A CHANGE OF THINKING
Teens can be their own worst critics, often creating patterns of negative thinking. Juliann Garey, a clinical assistant professor at NYU Langone School of Medicine, explains that this can be particularly true for kids who may be especially down on themselves or struggling with mental well-being.
In her recent Child Mind Institute article, How to Change Negative Thinking Patterns, Garey talks with clinical social worker, Jeff DeRoche, about the different types of negative thinking patterns and ways parents can help their children break those negative patterns. DeRoche highlights that the goal is for parents to model for their child that we all make thinking mistakes, and "the act of noticing them and making corrections . . . is usually the best medicine.”
