Principal's Message
Good afternoon, RMS families:
Welcome to the final nine weeks of the school year– we can scarcely believe we are full on into the spring quarter!
Springtime Success Campaign
This week is one of some new elective classes for 6th grade students and new opportunities for all students. As we head into the final stretch of the school year, we are spending some time revisiting behavior and academic expectations. We have seen a decline in the last two weeks of how students are treating each other and our community spaces, and expect that our Springtime Success campaign will help remedy some of the malaise. Please help prep your student for the following:
Week 1: April 15 - 19, 2024
Theme: Keep it Real, Keep it Clean, and Keep it Real Clean. This week focuses on students cleaning up after themselves– in classrooms, in the lunchroom, in hallways, etc., and how we treat our physical surroundings. It extends to the language students use in the hallways, too.
Week 2: April 22 - 26, 2024
Theme: In Class, On Task. This week focuses on students contributing positively in classrooms, participating authentically and staying engaged the entire class period.
Week 3: April 29 - May 3
Theme: Respectful, Responsible. This week focuses on students who take the extra step to support classroom and school community. We’re looking for the students who stay behind to put up chairs, the student who is extra kind to peers, the student who reaches out to a teacher to ask for help. In short, these are ordinary everyday action made extraordinary!
As we’ll do in our classrooms, we encourage you also to have conversations with your students about how they want to be and act and achieve in these last weeks before summer. Students can earn recognition and special opportunities by exhibiting outstanding behavior, social and academic, over the next three weeks in our Springtime Success campaign.
RMS Showcase on Friday!
We are thrilled to bring you RMS Showcase this Friday evening from 6:30 - 8:30 pm at school. There is so much happening during Showcase… and we cannot wait to see you there. Big props to Laura, our CORE Leaders, and RMS parents who have worked to put all the pieces together.
Because this is a community event, please plan on attending with your student. Unlike an activity night, this event is for all families and we have not planned on extra supervision like we would a student-only event. Please come with your student, pop around to various classrooms and locations throughout the school, and have fun with any number of activities.
Please especially consider visiting the small gym for the silent auction and Staffle Raffle. Showcase is not only a community event; it is also our one and only school fundraiser aside from our direct drive throughout the school year. Many thanks in advance for your generous support.
Hope to see you Friday… and in the meantime, have a great first week of the last quarter!
Courtney and Mike
Showcase Roosevelt - This Friday!
Roosevelt Showcase – Friday, April 19th – 6:30pm – 8:30pm
The RMS Showcase is RMS's biggest family event of the year, showcasing student and teacher projects and featuring carnival games, activities, food, and a silent auction! It's a wonderful opportunity to bring our school community together and raise funds for important initiatives, including high-impact learning experiences, additional staff and supplies, and more!
GET YOUR TICKETS NOW! Beginning Monday, April 15, pre-sale tickets will be sold during break from 10:25am to 10:40am (buy 10, get 1 free!). A pre-order form for tickets will also be sent home with students, and tickets will also be available at the door. Cash and check is our preferred way of payment, but credit card purchases will be available for the Silent Auction.
This year's Showcase Roosevelt involves 4 features that parents and students are going to love!
- Fun interactive and inflatable games - From "cup-cake walks" to basketball shootouts and Bingo to badminton, there will be lots of fun games for kids (and those "inner kids"!) to engage and enjoy with friends and family!
- Showcases of student and teacher projects - In years past, Showcase used to feature student and teacher projects, such as exciting and innovative classroom projects, special teaching approaches or learning strategies, and the work of student leaders helping other students! This year, Roosevelt is proud to be bringing this core element back and will be exhibiting several teacher and student showcases! You won't want to miss it!
- Silent auctions - Parents, there are going to be so many exciting items to choose from, you're going to have a hard time not bidding on everything! There will be a virtual cornucopia of art, gift baskets, coupons, gift cards/certificates, outdoor recreation gear, and entertainment packages from a wide variety of restaurants and grocery stores, recreation and hobby businesses, sports clubs, dental practices, and more! Cash and checks are highly preferred, so be sure to bring! Credit cards can also be accepted in most cases.
- Delicious FOOD! - Nothing says celebration quite like food! This year there will be food/dessert trucks, pizza, and more!
Volunteers Needed! Sign up here!
Events like this cannot happen without significant support from volunteers, and we still need several volunteers to help make this ambitious event a success! Everyone can help! Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even high school siblings can help to sell tickets, lead/assist with activities and games, collect payment for auctions, serve food, and clean up! Please consider volunteering a small portion of your time at the event by signing up HERE. State law also requires school volunteers to complete a basic background check HERE. Thank you in advance, as we cannot do this without you!
If you have any questions, please contact Laura Fuhriman at fuhriman_l@4j.lane.edu
OSAS and SEED Survey in One Month!
Roosevelt will deliver state tests the week of May 6 - 10. Please prepare for shortened instructional days– testing in the morning and classes in the afternoon– on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday that week. Wednesday will be a regular early release day.
Please see the schedule below. Though we do provide a supervised study hall in the Dining Hall the mornings class isn’t in session, your student is also welcome to arrive at 11:10 am Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday instead. Thanks!
Roosevelt uses OSAS test results to help us consider interventions and directions with our curriculum. While OSAS is not the only way in which we measure student growth and classroom assessments remain the most effective way to consider student progress, it is data we consider when writing school-wide goals and plan for improvements. We respect parents’ decision to opt students out and wanted to also share with you when and how we use the data. Thanks for considering this perspective!
In addition to OSAS testing, Oregon will also deliver the SEED Survey this year– the Student Educational Equity Development Survey. This survey is intended to gather information about the educational experiences of students in Oregon. The Oregon Department of Education will then allocate resources and supports for districts where they are most needed.
You can read about the SEED Survey here. Please use this form if you wish to opt out your student. You can drop a signed form by the front office or email it to Kellie Salinas: salinas_k@4j.lane.edu.
