DISCOVERY SCHOOL AT FOUR CORNERS
JUNE 2021
FROM THE PRINCIPAL'S DESK
Here we are entering the last two weeks of school. What a crazy year we have had! I am so amazed by the resilience and dedication that our students, families, and staff have shown during such an unusual school year. I couldn’t be more proud of our students as they have embraced the many changes we had to put in place in order to maintain a safe and healthy learning environment. It hasn’t always been easy, but we got through it together!
As we rapidly approach the summer I'd like to share with families some general reminders to support summer learning and ensure a smooth transition back to school in the fall. Students' reading abilities can decline from the end of one school year to the beginning of the next school year. This is sometimes referred to as the summer slide. To prevent any reading loss it's important that children continue to read throughout the summer. We recommend 20 minutes of daily reading. This could be read aloud, family reading to the child, silent reading, etc. Consistent reading and learning over the summer can improve academic progress, provide opportunities for family engagement, and motivate young minds. Reading is really essential to a student's success. It's the building block to so many other subjects to include math, social studies, science, and specials. If you have any questions regarding summer reading or you'd like some recommendations for your child, please do not hesitate to speak with our librarian, Ms. Mele, our reading teacher, Ms. Wood, or your child's classroom teacher.
During the next two weeks, students and staff will wrap up the year by participating in fun activities and events. We will be having a modified version of field day this year. Students will stay in their cohorts, and move from station to station outside. Field day is not open to families this year due to COVID-19 restrictions. Thank you for your understanding. Be sure to read the list of school events below as well as any teacher newsletters and postings for classroom events.

Our DSFC School Council is looking for parent/guardian representatives to join. School Council is a (Department of Elementary and Secondary Education-mandated) group that meets regularly to discuss the School Improvement Plan, Innovation Plan, school climate, budget issues, and other relevant topics with the principal. The DSFC school Council has been a very productive group since its inception several years ago that has significantly helped the principal and school.
