A Note from the Principal
Hello Bush Families!
It was an exciting week at Bush. With an eclipse, tornado warning, and rainy day dismissal our students and teachers did a great job with all the changes!
Next week our third and fourth graders will be taking the STAAR test. I know they are going to do a great job. We are excited to celebrate their hard work on Monday, May 13th with a Kona Ice party.
Just a reminder, next Friday is a professional development day for teachers and students are off from school.
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Thompson

GT Summer Testing
Gifted and Talented Program nominations are now open for 2024 summer testing. Students who enrolled in Bush after January 1, 2024 are eligible for testing. If your child enrolled after January 1, 2024, and you believe your child should be tested for our GT program, please click on the link, fill out the forms on the website under the tab labeled Referral Forms (only fill out the Referral form and Parent Survey) and return them to Mrs. Dupre. Nominations will be accepted until April 30, 2024. Testing will take place May 28-30 from 8:00 -11:00 am at Bush Elementary. If you have any questions, reach out to Mrs. Dupre, our GT coordinator at ddupre@conroeisd.net.
Reporting Student Absences
If your child is sick or will not be present at school please inform us each day of the absence. To report an absence for your child, please do one of the following:
- Email the registrar – srandall@conroeisd.net with your student’s absence information.
- Call our attendance line at 936-709-1610 and leave a message stating your child’s name, reason for the absence, person reporting the absence, and a phone number.
When your child returns to school, a note explaining the absence should be brought to their teacher or the front office.
If your child is not in attendance at school for the entire day for any reason, the student is considered “absent”. There are basically two types of absences:
- Excused Absence: an absence is considered "excused" when there is prior parental notification (phone call or email) explaining the absence, or a note from a parent or medical professional upon return to school. Absences can be excused if they are related to illness, medical appointment, a death in the family, or other health related reasons. An excused absence does not remove the absence from the student’s record, but it does document that a student is absent for an excusable reason.
- Unexcused Absence: an absence is considered “unexcused” when there is no prior parental notification, no note or email sent upon return explaining the absence, for family travel/vacation, or other absences not recognized as "excused" by the district or state.

Classroom Counseling Lessons
In our last round of counseling lessons, we focused on a variety of topics to support resilience, friendship skills, test anxiety and peer pressure. If you have any questions about these topics feel free to reach out to your student’s grade-level counselor.
In Kindergarten we read the book The Most Magnificent Thing by Ashley Spires and talked about themes such as creativity, disappointment, RESILIENCE, and perseverance. We should try again when we are in difficult situations and never give up. We discussed ways to calm our minds and bodies such as taking a break, breathing, muscle relaxation, talking to someone, and thinking positive thoughts.
In First grade we read the book Let’s Play! A Book About Making Friends by Amanda McCardie. We completed a card sort, and discussed ways to be a friend in class, on the playground, at lunch, and during specials. We explored ways to reach out to the people around us and thought about what it means to be a good friend.
Second graders read The Not So Friendly Friend by Christina Furnival. We discussed important character traits that are the ‘keys to friendship”. We also discussed the importance of setting healthy boundaries with peers that may be treating you in an unkind or unfair manner.
In preparation for STAAR, third grade students had a lesson on test anxiety. They learned how worry/anxiety may develop. We discussed actions to reduce worry through daily self-care and coping strategies.
Fourth graders had a lesson on peer pressure. We read Peer Pressure Gauge by Julia Cook and discussed how peer pressure may slowly increase over time. Students learned the importance of preparing for peer pressure situations beforehand by identifying their values. We also discussed how to use “polite doubt” as a strategy in peer pressure situations.
In our upcoming counseling lessons we will be talking about personal safety. Kinder and first graders will be learning about body autonomy and safety. Second, third and fourth graders will learn about being safe online. Please contact your counselor if you have any questions about our safety lessons.

We ask that you complete it and send it back to school. If some of the information is not known, we can update via email as needed. This will help in planning for the next year.
