2019-2020 School Year: Volume 6: Week of October 7, 2019
Be the Best YOU at Grandview!!!
October is a big Month for Grandview
October is a big month for families. There are lots of big events that we are looking forward to having you all attend. We already celebrated with Homecoming Parades and Football Games. We had our WatchDOG pizza party. Though Fall Festival, field trips and band are what is coming up at Grandview.
Though another big topic that is part of this month is October is Bullying Prevention Month. Instead of focusing on bullying, I will be focusing on PRIDE this month. Our PRIDE characteristics are the most significant contributors to positive school climate. Being polite and respectful makes others happy, makes you feel good, and helps prevent bullying. The other reason why I want to focus on PRIDE is that I believe the more common language that we use with our students, the better chance that the students are carrying out these behaviors.
Also, I believe that one of the most overused and misused word in education is the word Bullying. Parents believe if their child was picked on, they were bullied. In my 15 years in education, I have seen three bullies. I have met mean kids and I have met rude kids and kids who made a bad choice in the heat of the moment, but those students are not bullies. That is why I want to focus on PRIDE. If kids are carrying out PRIDE, then rude and mean kids turn into kind kids. I always refer to the below poster when I think about bullying. I also do not take bullying lightly, but be careful how we use this word. Rude and mean kids deserve consequences, but bullying is a completely different issue that requires intensive problem solving and protocol within Grandview. Remember to look for all of the ways we want to help support our PRIDE students and please reach out to me should you need more information about bullying. A great resource to bullying is to visit the site https://www.stopbullying.gov.
I look forward to seeing you at all of these exciting events this month!!

The Importance of Sleep
Importance of being in school
Education is important for your child’s success in life. Regular attendance ensures that your child gets all the benefits school can offer. When children are missing school, they’re missing out on those benefits. School attendance is so important, that Michigan law makes it compulsory for all children ages 6 to 16 attending public schools. When children are excessively absent, the law holds parents/guardians accountable. If your child is truant (missing scheduled school time without an accepted excused absence), you and/or your child could end up in court with serious consequences. Attendance may be the single most important factor in school success because:
- Children do best in school when they are in class every day. The U.S. Department of Education reports that for every missed day of school, it takes a student two days to catch up.
- In addition to academics, children learn valuable lessons about personal responsibility and commitment.
- Children keep up with their peers and have stronger bonds with the school and community.
- Annually, students who graduate from high school will earn 30% more than those who don’t complete high school.
- One in 10 kindergarten students miss nearly a month of school every year. In some districts, it runs as high as 1 in 3.
- Kindergarteners who miss 10 percent of school days have lower academic performance when they reach first grade.
- Chronic absence in kindergarten translated into lower fifth grade achievement.
Below is some important information about the correlation between attendance and achievement.
Household Survey -- Every Family Needs to Complete
We need EVERY family to fill out and sign the Household Information Survey (one per family), which is needed for administrative purposes, not to determine eligibility. This survey allows our school to benefit from various State and Federal supplemental programs, like Title I A, At Risk (31a), Title II A, E- Rate, etc. This survey is critical in determining the amount of money the school receives from a variety of supplemental programs. Programs, such as our Intervention program, including teachers and paraprofessionals and student support coaches could be lost if these surveys are not completed. We are asking that you please complete and submit it as soon as possible, but no later than September 30th. All information on the survey submitted is confidential. Without your assistance, the school cannot maximize utilization of available State and Federal funds.
The form is on-line on the Parent Portal, so you will need your students PIN and password.

A Message from Mrs. Frost
Digital Citizenship Week begins October 14th. In Info Tech class, all Grandview students will learn about important topics such as: media balance and well-being, online privacy and security, cyberbullying, and digital footprint and identity. Our goal is to empower students with skills and strategies to evaluate what they see online, while also helping them develop self-awareness and self-regulation as they manage their own technology use.
