Benchmark Assessments FAQ
Should I or my student freak out?
No.
Good. What is a benchmark assessment anyway?
Leander ISD administers two district-created benchmark assessments in third grade: One in December and the other in May. They are based on curriculum that has been taught in the corresponding semesters and look similar to the state's STAAR assessment.
You said STAAR! Is this the STAAR test?
No, but it is meant to look and feel similar to the STAAR to prepare students for the peculiar nature of standardized tests. We spend most of our time drawing, talking, doing, questioning, and experimenting, so it is necessary for us to practice being still and quiet while answering multiple-choice questions.
Is this for a grade?
The district benchmark is one piece of data we look at to determine if a student has mastered a particular skill. We look at the whole child and not solely at one test on one day.
When will I find out how my child did?
Results will likely be sent home with their 2nd nine-weeks report card.
What can I do to help my child prepare?
Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep, eats a good breakfast, and arrives at school on time. You already do those things, so you have nothing to worry about.
