IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FAMILIES: YOUTH SUBSTANCE ABUSE TRENDS
As we head into spring break, the Appleton Area School District wants to partner with our elementary families in addressing some challenges to the well-being and safety of youth in our community. Parents, guardians, and caregivers must be aware of troubling youth substance use trends occurring within the Fox Valley and nationally.
Data and research are showing a trend of youth experimenting with substances such as alcohol, THC, nicotine, prescription medication, and other drugs at earlier ages. There have been reported cases in the Fox Valley of students as young as 9 bringing and using substances at school. In addition to the immediate safety concerns, this is concerning for several reasons:
Youth are not always aware of the full impact and dangers of the substances they are exposed to.
As a youth’s brain is not fully developed, there is a greater risk for addiction to occur.
The use of substances including nicotine is associated with difficulty with focus and concentration, increased levels of stress and anxiety, increased irritability, and poor sleep.
Early substance use is linked with lower academic performance.
Early substance use could be a warning sign that the youth is experiencing a significant and ongoing challenge.
In our local area, THC products and prescription medications have sent children to the hospital due to the effects.
You play a vital role in early substance use prevention. Family support and guidance is instrumental to the success of our youth. We are aware it can be difficult to know how to have conversations with your children about substance use and the effects of substances such as alcohol, THC, nicotine, and other drugs on the developing brain.
A MESSAGE FOR 4TH GRADE FAMILIES FROM MRS. CARPENTER - RICHMOND'S BAND TEACHER
Dear Parents/Guardians,
You will soon have a 5th grader in your midst. When students enter the 5th grade, they have the opportunity to begin instruction on a band instrument. There is no guarantee your child will have this opportunity again so NOW as an upcoming 5th grader is the time to join the band. This spring, band recruitment will begin. Your child will hear a full band demonstration of all the different band instruments and then will be able to sign up for a band instrument fitting. This is a very fun and exciting experience! Current 4th graders are invited to join elementary band THIS SPRING and start in the fall. So start thinking about it now! No previous instrument experience is required. As children grow, they need ways to express themselves individually as well as in a group. Playing in the band will provide the challenge to do both. Also, a child who learns to play an instrument learns discipline and cooperation with others. Band is something that your child can be a part of from fall of 5th grade through high school.
Like any other endeavor, being a successful band member requires hard work, dedication and parental support, but the payoff lasts a lifetime. Band participation strengthens confidence and pride, generates happiness, positively affects other academics, develops small and large motor skills, and provides space for creativity and imagination. Students become part of a “band team”, meet new friends and have fun learning and playing music together.
Elementary Band Facts and Questions:
-Does a student need to choose between band or strings? No. Your student does not have to choose between strings and band in elementary school. A motivated student can do well in both classes!
-What is the time commitment for practicing? 20 minutes of practice per day or 100 minutes per week is strongly recommended to ensure steady progress on an instrument.
-Expense? Most families choose to rent an instrument at first. Rental costs range from $20 to $75 per month depending on the instrument selected. Large instruments such as tubas, baritones, and French horns are rented through the AASD. The district also maintains an inventory of other instruments for students with a financial need. NO ONE is turned away from the band because of family finances!
If your child is interested in being a member of the beginning band program, please look for more elementary band information coming soon! I would love to have a huge band next year! Please encourage your child to join the band. Band demonstrations and instrument tryouts will take place this spring.
If you have any questions prior to that time, please feel welcome to email Mrs. Carpenter at carpenterkelle@aasd.k12.wi.us
