Learning Rounds I Coming Up on Sept. 20
The process involves classroom visits by a team of about 4 to 5 teachers, administrators, and central office directors. The team will quietly enter your room to observe the delivery of instruction and student behaviors. The team will be writing or typing furiously, trying to capture everything that you say. Our focus this year, as last year, is the level of questioning. We want to increase the rigor in this area so that students become accustomed to thinking critically. We have added student responses and "student talk" as an additional focus. We would like for students to respond to questions in complete sentences that reflect careful thought and analysis, if possible. Student talk involves students discussing questions and/or content with their peers.
One way we can work towards this is to be sure that students always answer in a complete sentence. This might require that they restate a portion of the question in their answer. As they become more and more comfortable with this, it will happen naturally. Students are just used to giving short answers to questions. To increase the amount of "student talk", build opportunities in your lessons. For example, in Texas history, you might say, "Turn to your shoulder partner and discuss what may have happened if..." Of course you would walk about the room and eavesdrop on their discussions to make sure they are on task. You might even add some additional thoughts and questions to the group to consider.
This is also a form of assessment.
So, on September 20, should a group of adults walk into your room, DO NOT PANIC. This is not a "gotcha." Act as if we are not there and do your thing!
