CogAT Testing
In September, all students in 1st grade will participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT).
CogAT measures a child’s general and specific cognitive abilities. These abilities are assessed in three domains: verbal (reading), quantitative (math), and nonverbal (spatial representation).
Please keep in mind the results of this test are just one aspect of your child’s performance. CogAT results are typically delivered to campuses in late October or early November. Scores will be available online for parents to view through Parent Portal. More detailed information about CogAT and instructions on how to access the scores on Parent Portal will be sent home once we receive the results.
CogAT Testing Schedule:
September 25th – 28th
· 1st Grade

Fire Prevention Safety Contest
“Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere”
"LOOK” for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
“LISTEN” for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.
“LEARN” two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.
Important Dates:
- October 7th-13th: National Fire Prevention Week
- Wednesday, October 10th: Fire Prevention posters are due to box outside of Art room
- Wednesday, October 24th: 5:30 pm Citywide Awards Assembly at the City Council Chambers, downtown Plano (Building winners will not be recognized at this awards ceremony. The fire department will notify the city winners and their teachers and invite them to the awards ceremony.)
Sleepy Kid?
Snacks and Water Bottles
Great snack ideas: baby carrots, raisins, pretzels, grapes, crackers, and granola type bars. Please no chips or cookies.
Our first grade at Barksdale is a NUT FREE ZONE. Please be conscious of this when choosing and packing your child's snack.
We also encourage each student to bring a water bottle with an attached lid to school each day to keep at his or her desk. Please remember...water only!
