Procedures and Expectations
Have you heard that before?
Chapter 3 of Carrots and Sticks is all about setting procedures and having high expectations. This is something we have preached from day one and we know the positive influence that is has for our students. But as I re-read this chapter it brought about a question for me, have you revisited the procedures you have for your students since those first two weeks of "buy-in" when we were heavily concentrating on it? In PLC this week Emily shared with us the process for behavior RtI and one of the steps of a strong Tier 1 classroom was that you have shared your rules and procedures with parents. All day long when she mentioned this I saw looks of wonder and teachers questioning themselves and if they had shared these things with parents. So for this week I have two challenges for you. Challenge number 1, send a reminder note home with parents and review with your students what your procedures are. Challenge number 2, take time this week to tell every one of your students your high expectations you have for them. Challenge them to something this week and celebrate with them when they reach it. Then, when you do that, email Emily and me so that we can celebrate with you!
I saw this anchor chart and thought it was very applicable. This is something I've talked with many of you about, setting expectations that students NEVER interrupt you during small groups!
Never stop!
