What is Cri du Chat syndrome? Cri du Chat syndrome is a syndrome that occurs when a a portion of Chromosome 5 is deleted. This is not an inherited syndrome, and it is found in an ethnic backgrounds.
How does this affect the body? This syndrome is found in infants. This condition causes infants to have a high-pitched cry that sounds like a cat. More effects include intellectual disability, delayed development, small head size(microcephaly), low birth weight, weak muscle tone, and in some cases heart defects.
More Facts. 1 in 20,000 to 50,000 newborns are diagnosed with is condition. Some deletions can be bigger than others, which also results in more severe symptoms.
