Horizon Newsletter
April 2024
Dear Horizon Family,
April sure has had a way of sneaking up on us quickly! Before we know it we will be having the sun shining and be looking forward to beautiful spring weather for the students to enjoy. Until that sunshine arrives consistently please remember it can be pretty cool and wet out some days (especially in the mornings so please dress accordingly). Along with that comes that dreaded "spring fever" making students ability to focus on school challenging some days but now is when we have to challenge our kiddos to buckle down and finish the school year out strong!
Attendance is also a vital part of learning. our school goal of 94% attendance is again in place for 4th quarter and we need your help in getting your child(ren) to school every day to avoid gaps in their learning. It is very challenging for your child to "catch up" when they are absent so please help us in getting them here each and every day!
We look forward to seeing you all and showing off our new gym and stage during our spring concerts (Schedules below) when your child(ren) are singing their little hearts out for the spring concert. I know they and Mrs. Remaley have been working really hard to put on a fantastic show for you all.
Warm Regards,
Jill Taylor

Spring into Spring with Fabulous Attendance
Parent's PLEASE HELP your student help us out!
WE NEED TO MEET OUR GOAL
(we just missed 2nd and 3rd quarter!)
PRO TIPS:
Schedule appointments around the school day if possible.
Encourage children to attend everyday
(only fever, vomiting and diarrhea are reasons to stay home)
ATTENDANCE MATTERS!
GUIDANCE CORNER: PARENT TIPS
In school we teach kids to identify their emotions because research has shown it improves their academic performance and creates positive behaviors both in and out of the classroom. When your child is experiencing an intense emotion, you can try some of the things we use at school. We have found that by helping the child identify and feel the emotion (but not hurting themselves or others), will help change the mood.
For example, when your child is feeling sad, you can ask her what zone she is in (see zones below) and then listen, acknowledge, and redirect to another activity. Other times, you can practice a coping strategy with them like learning how to breathe slowly and deeply especially if they are angry (see Elephant breathing below).
Zones
Green zone: happy, calm, focused, content
Blue zone: sad, tired, bored or sick
Yellow zone: stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, confusion
Red zone: anger, panic, terror
Elephant Breathing: Take one arm and place it in front of you. As you inhale, move the arm up and when you exhale, move your arm down. Much like the trunk of an elephant moving up and down.

UPCOMING Staff and Student ALICE Training!
This month (April 12th) the Horizon STAFF will be doing a "mock" evacuation drill before doing a practice evacuation drill will the students.
This is a continuation of our safety initiative for the Jerome School District and our January Professional Development on ALICE Training which empowers our staff to respond with confidence in the event of a violent critical incident or active shooter scenario; should it happen in our school . This type of training (ALICE Training) enables staff to be trained to respond and keep your child SAFE and respond effectively using a wide variety of ALICE skills.
After the staff practices in April, we will be carefully working with the students to explain safety procedures and practice the evacuation ("E") component of the ALICE skills so they, too, are able to respond with confidence in the event of an emergency.
Safe Kids are NO accident! It takes planning, drills, and practice to know what to do in the event of a crisis situation!
S.T.O.P.
S=SILENT
T=TURN to Teacher
O=Open ears/eyes
P=Pay attention
This is a VERY IMPORTANT skill every single classroom is implementing and teaching students about as a precursor to their ALICE training. Learning how to be absolutely silent and listen to the adult in the room for instruction in the case of an emergency is an absolute skill that they must learn.
The only way that they will become skilled and proficient at this STOP skill is through practice. Therefore we will be "practicing" S.T.O.P. every single day whenever the intercom comes on. Elementary students must learn self control and discipline out of necessity and it happens through training.
