Jose Efrain Rios Montt, was a Guatemalan politician that was also President of Guatemala form 1982 to 1983. During 1982 he had become one of the most controversial figures in Guatemala. He had first been an army general and years later he served as president of Congress. Later, he was over thrown by his Defense Minister. A Defense Minister regulates armed forces and is in charge of the general budget. Montt tries to come back years down the road, Montt runs for candidate of the Guatemalan Republic Front in 2003. 2012 was when Rios Montt's term in office finally ran out.Before Jose Efrain Rios Montt had been the 26th president of Guatemala and in office, he was just a child. Montt was born June 16. in Huehuetenango Guatemala. He had then had two spouses and three children between the two. He had the religion Pentecostal. Later down the road he ran for office in March 23rd in 1982 till August 1983.Efrain Rios Montt was one of the most violent presidents in Latin America. Montt committed abuses such as, widespread massacres, rape, torture and acts of genocide against the indigenous population. 200,000 or more murders , executions and disappearances had occurred under Montt's rule as well. The 36 year Civil War had arrived also while Montt was in power, it had been Latin America's most violent civil wars in history.
