GROWING GREATNESS through using our self-control to push through "spring fever"
As we all know, this is the time of year where we all get "spring fever". Days are getting longer, the weather is starting to warm up, spring sports begin, and we can finally enjoy the outdoors. However, we must remember that there are two months left of school.
Our vocabulary word for the month of April is self-control. Self-control is learning how to steer your own willpower in the directions you want to go so that you may achieve your goals. For our students, this would involve academics, behavior, and social skills when interacting with school work, peers and adults.
As we learn about self-control, we will be using this to assist us in getting through this "spring fever" to hunker down for these last two months of school. Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders will have the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge base this month when they take the state assessment, ILEARN, for two to three weeks. All students, K-5, will be able to show their growth and achievement in early May through the EOY iReady assessments in both reading and math. We are very excited to see how well they do!
Thank you for entrusting us with your child's education,
Stephanie Leasure

Front Office Guidance from Mrs. Hilterbrand and Miss Myers:
Testing season is here. It will be important for students in grades 3,4, and 5 to arrive to school on time so they may test with their class. If students arrive late, they may have to stay in the office and wait until their class is done testing before they may join them. Please do your best to schedule appointments in the afternoon or wait until May.
Field trip season is here. A background check must be on file if you plan to attend the field trip. If needed, please call the office to see if you already have a background check on file.
Please help your child to keep track of the everchanging temperatures each day. This will help them to dress accordingly for outdoor recess, including jackets, if needed.
If your child is ill, please make sure to call your child(ren) in sick to school. You may call before school hours and leave us a message, if needed. Our number is (260) 347-1354. If we do not hear from you, we will call to check in on your child. Please remember the 24 hour rule, they should be fever free, vomit free, and diarrhea free for 24 hours before returning to school.
*Please make sure to call our office BEFORE 2:00 p.m. if you need to change your child's transportation on the way home for that day. This allows us time to share this information with both the teacher and your child before dismissal begins at 2:40 p.m. Your child's safety and making it home is our #1 priority. We appreciate you helping us with this!
We came in 68th out of 151 teams. Way to go Wildbots!!!
Student Learning with Miss T
I wanted to share with you why vocabulary is so important for your child's learning journey.
Vocabulary, simply put, refers to the words we know and use. Here's why it matters:
Understanding Everything Around Them: Think of vocabulary as the key to understanding the world. The more words your child knows, the better they can understand what they read, hear, and see. From books to conversations to classroom lessons, a strong vocabulary helps them make sense of everything.
Doing Well in School: Imagine your child reading a book or listening to their teacher. If they come across a word they don't know, it can be like hitting a roadblock. But with a good vocabulary, they can breeze through, understanding everything more easily with confidence.
Expressing Themselves: When your child has a rich vocabulary, they can express themselves better. They can tell stories, explain ideas, and ask questions more clearly. This skill isn't just for school—it's for life. Whether they're talking to friends, giving a presentation, or someday interviewing for a job, a strong vocabulary is a big advantage.
Building Connections: Words are like building blocks for learning. The more words your child knows, the easier it is for them to learn new things. Each word they learn opens doors to understanding even more words and ideas. It's like a chain reaction that keeps their mind growing.
Enjoying Reading and Learning: Finally, a good vocabulary makes learning and reading more enjoyable. Imagine reading a book and understanding every word without having to stop and look things up. It's like unlocking a treasure chest of stories and knowledge!
As parents, you play a vital role in helping your child build their vocabulary. Talking, reading together, and encouraging curiosity are some of the best ways to do this. By making vocabulary a priority, you're giving your child a gift that will benefit them for life. Thank you for your support in your child's learning journey!
In Tune with Attendance and Safety with Mr. Perlich:
Attendance:
Welcome back from spring break! We are on the home stretch of the school year with 2 months remaining. Let’s finish off the school year by getting your student to school every day! Please communicate with the office on days your students will be absent. If we do not hear from someone, we will be making calls to verify the absence. Please refer to the EN attendance policy if you ever have questions as to why you are getting letters or being asked to come in for an attendance meeting. These meetings are a step in our protocol that is important to get information to you about your child and the importance of getting them to school. If you ever have questions, please call me and I would be happy to walk you through the process. Communication is an essential part of working together!
Safety:
April will be a month that we practice a lot of drills. A fire drill, lockdown and shelter-in-place will be ones that will be scheduled. Others may come up as an as needed basis. State Law requires all schools to practice these drills on a regular basis each month. We practice drills to make sure all staff and students are prepared in case we are ever faced with an emergency. We continue to look for ways to make our practices better. We take safety seriously and want to make sure your children feel safe while at North Side Elementary. If you should ever have questions, please feel free to reach out to me at jperlich@eastnoble.net.
The Nurse's Nook:
Strep throat seems to be the illness that is rapidly spreading right now. Remind your child(ren) not to share drinks, chapstick, etc... with friends and continue to cover their mouths when coughing and sneezing. We also want to remind them of the importance of washing hands frequently.
Other reminders:
- Your child must be fever-free, without fever-reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school. The same applies to vomiting and diarrhea.
- Please send a change of clothes in your child’s backpack for those occasional accidents or spills. I will do my best to provide your child with a change of clothes, but if I do not have the appropriate size, I will have to call home and ask for a change of clothes.
- If your child has clothes that they have outgrown, I am always accepting clothing donations!! This is how I keep my “extra clothes” stocked. I am always in need of pants and underwear, sizes 6-12. Don’t worry, clothes are always washed before I give them to students 😊
