Engaging Students with Poverty in Mind- Engage for Deep Understanding
1- Understand labels- help the brain create markers so that it knows where to store information.
2-Discover properties- learn qualities, or properties of the content
3- Develop context and meaning- give content meaning by giving it context.
4- Get it right- assess the understanding.
5- Learn to transfer- connect content to real-world situations.
Let's look at creating a deep understanding by using the example of a kangaroo.
1- Understanding Labels: Introduce the subject to students: "This animal is a kangaroo."
2- Discover properties: Help students identify properties of kangaroos: "Kangaroos have strong legs and tails for jumping. Joeys start in the pouch."
3- Develop Context and Meaning: Bring the class to the zoo or show them the movie, Joey. Ask students to describe their own impressions of or experiences with kangaroos.
4- Getting it Right: Have students create and exchange quizzes about kangaroos, then take them and discuss the results.
5- Learning to Transfer: Discuss: "Do you think the invention of hands-free baby carriers, fanny packs or pogo sticks was inspired by kangaroos' properties?"
Learn more strategies of how to engage in deep understanding by reading the chapter. I will post it on the Google Drive and share it with you.
