Library-in-Review
An update of the month's activities in the LHMS Library.
September in Review
This month students were oriented to the library, created and tinkered with foam pieces and toothpicks, and started to find out all there is to do in the library.
Hard at Work
Focusing on the September Challenge to build a structure that can hold 10 marbles...or more!
Putting it Together
Students work together to combine foam pieces and toothpicks to build their structure.
Scanning Scavenger Hunt Clues
Students worked in small groups to complete a scavenger hunt around the library. At the end everyone came together to discuss the various areas of the library and basic library rules.
Roald Dahl Day
In honor of Roald Dahl's 100th birthday, 80 students participated in activities to celebrate the author. After enjoying their lunch in the library, Ms. Yost read aloud from one of his classic novels, The BFG. In the chapter that was read the BFG shows human Sophie snozzcumbers, and has her taste this disgusting vegetable. After the reading, students tried "snozzcumbers" while watching the beginning of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the first movie based on Dahl's Book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
By-the-Numbers
Period 5 has the most students in the library
"Lunch Activities" are the most common reason to visit.
Working Together To Develop Researchers
This month, in addition to orientation classes, Ms. Yost taught 6 different classes about research. Mrs. Rizzo and Mrs. Weinreb's 5th-grade classes were given an introduction to the importance of citation for their first Social Studies projects. Students learned how to use their TechBook to find photos for their project as well as the proper way to cite the information.
Mrs. Monschauer's classes were introduced to Britannica in order to learn the difference between STEAM and STEM and were given specific websites to use to learn about the Engineering Design process.
