A Glimpse into Our Busy Library:
Sewing
Carly learned that an important tool in sewing is a seam ripper. Here she is taking out a seam so she can resew it to fix a mistake. Carly works on sewing before school and during Maker Monday Club.
Science Project 3D Printed
When Noah realized he needed to create an imaginary animal for his 8th grade science class, he immediately designed a 3D model which we printed.
Public Library Resources
All Buncombe County Schools students now have access to public library materials using their lunch number and a pin. In early October, Ms. Sturdivant showed 6th grade students how to access ebooks and audio books through the Sora app in Clever.
Maker Monday Club
Our Maker Monday Club started in October. Students in this club choose a focus area and work through tasks to earn badges. Current areas are sewing, coding, 3D printing, legos, and robotics. We plan to add other areas throughout the year.
Battle of the Books Club
Battle of the Books also started up in October. Students are trying out for twelve spots on the school team. These students are reading books from a state list, memorizing titles and authors, and practicing answering questions about the books.
Mornings in the Library
Mornings in the library continue to be a busy place with 40-50 students on most mornings. Students read books, 3D print, sew, play games (UNO, Mancala, Blokus, and Rumis), do homework, and hang out with friends.
6th Grade Snap Circuits Stations
Students in Mr. Noteboom's science classes came to the library for a day of Science Labs in the Library. For this lab, students moved through stations exploring energy through SnapCircuits and through a virtual circuit station.
6th Grade Non-fiction Text Stations
Students in Ms. Drakeford's ELA classes came to the library to work through Non-Fiction Text Stations. At each station, students worked together to identify the type of non-fiction (in either books or printouts).
NCSLMA Annual Conf.
In early October, Ms. Tremble, Ms. Kasyan, and Ms. Sturdivant went to the NC School Library Media Association's Annual Conference. Ms. Kasyan presented on Sketchnoting at the conference; all three enjoyed learning from their peers across the state. While at the conference, Ms. Sturdivant moved into the position of President Elect of NCSLMA.
Recommendation Station
Students and teachers are encouraged to recommend good books to other readers. To recommend a book, stop by the library and fill out the recommendation form. If your book recommendation is used by another student, then your name is put in a drawing for a weekly prize.
