March is Reading Month
TOUCHDOWN WITH A GOOD BOOK
March is designated as “Reading Month” in Michigan schools. Our goal is to promote a love of reading throughout the month by giving special emphasis to activities that promote reading as a fun and enjoyable experience. This year Disney's Theme will be “Touchdown with a Good Book”.
March is not done yet…..spring break is a great time to read a book! Even though we are not in school, we still encourage students to meet their reading goals this week while at home or vacation.
Kindergarten & 1st Grade: 15 minutes per day
2nd & 3rd Grade: 20 minutes per day
4th - 6th Grade: 30 minutes per day
We are moving down Ford Field! Each class that meets their reading goals can move down the field. Help your class be the first to score a Touchdown by reading at home everyday and filling out your calendar!
Staff Read Aloud's At Home
As part of our March is Reading month, we want to encourage reading at home. Each week, some of our staff will share a read aloud for you to watch with your families at home. This week we have read aloud from Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Browe, and 6th Grade Teacher, Mrs. McGuffey. Click on the links below to read a story with your kids!
Author Bryan Chick Visits Disney
We were fortunate to have Bryan Chick, author of The Secret Zoo and WayFinder visited Disneys 4th, 5th, & 6th grade students. It was a great experience learning about the writing process and behind the scenes of publishing a book!
Students can order a signed copy of Wayfider for $10. Complete order form and return with cash or check made out to Disney Elementary by Thursday, April 4. Extra order forms are available from Mrs. Cichocki.
Disney Family Book Bingo
Pet Adoption
3rd Grade continues to celebrate March is Reading Month with a reading buddy pet adoption. Students fill out applications to adopt a reading buddy and promise to read to their animal for 20 minutes each day. They enjoyed an afternoon of creativity while visiting the Pet Grooming Station, Vet Area, and designing shelters for their animals. The reading buddies continue to show up daily and love being a part of our Drop Everything and Read time each day. The kids were so excited to help their reading buddy pets find their "furever" homes!

We love reading at Disney!
PBIS - Attendance Trophy
ATTENDANCE TROPHY
Regular school attendance is very important for academic success, social development, habit formation, and preparation for the future. We love seeing our students everyday at Disney! To help support and encourage positive attendance, our PBIS team has started a traveling Disney Attendance trophy! This trophy, made especially for Disney Elementary, travels weekly to the classroom with the highest attendance rate. This week we focused on the being to school on-time and the class with the most improved number of tardies earned the attendance trophy. The Attendance Champion is, Ms. Oddo's 4th grade class! Ms. Oddo's class was not only the most improved tardies but they also had the fewest number of tardies with only 1 tardy last week! Way to go, Ms. Oddo's class!
This upcoming week we will focus on attendance. The class with the highest attendance rate for the week of March 18th will win the attendance trophy! Let's make sure to get to school on-time everyday this week!
Solar Eclipse Viewing
On April 8, 2024 a solar eclipse will be visible on a path across the United States. This will be the only solar eclipse for the next 20 years and Fraser Public Schools will be just outside the path of totality, actually 99%, for this solar eclipse. Disney students (with your permission indicated below) will be allowed to go outside and participate in activities and view the eclipse.
As always, student safety is our top concern. Looking directly at the sun is unsafe. The only safe way to look at the sun or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters, such as “eclipse glasses”. Our Disney PTO has provided all students, faculty and staff with eclipse glasses to wear during this event. Although there is no way to fully guarantee student safety during such a rare event, we will take precautionary measures including pre-education to make students aware of the risks involved in directly looking at the sun.
Permission slips will be sent home with your student. If you want your child to participate in outdoor viewing activities planned on April 8th for the eclipse, please review, sign and return the permission slip as soon as possible. If you do not wish for your child to be outside during this event or if you do not return this form, alternative activities will be held inside during this period.
Earth Day Fun
Your cafeteria staff & the Food Service Department are running a special Earth Day activity for students.
Here is how it works:
Each student will come home with an Earth Day art project sheet next week. Extras will be available in the office and are linked below. Due date for the art project is April 22nd which is EARTH DAY. Mrs. Hinson will collect the art projects on the morning of April 22nd.
Each student who turns in the Earth Day 2024 project will receive a cookie from the food service department.
Your Earth Day art project can be painted, drawn, stenciled, etc. Just remember to write your name and teacher on the bottom of your sheet.
All artwork will be sent over to the Food Service office and with help from the Administration Team they will pick one winner from each school and that winner will receive a pizza party for their whole class! 😊
Let’s be creative and have FUN!Let’s be creative and have FUN!
M-Step is Coming
M-Step starts in April for Grades 3-6
Each spring, the State of Michigan and the US Department of Education (USDE) require us to assess students in certain subject areas through the M-STEP, PSAT and SAT. The assessments provide the district with a snapshot of student achievement at the state, district, and building levels. Individual student results will also be shared with parents. The tentative assessment dates for M-Step are as follows:
3rd Grade
Thursday, April 11 - ELA
Wednesday, April 17 - Math
4th Grade
Wednesday, April 24 - ELA
Wednesday, May 1 - Math
5th Grade
Wednesday, April 10 - ELA
Tuesday, April 23 - Math
Thursday, May 2 - Social Studies
Wednesday, May 8 - Science
6th Grade
Tuesday, April 30 - ELA
Tuesday, May 7 - Math
Please ensure that your child is well rested on their testing day. They should come to school with a fully charged iPad .
Please note- We have makeup days built into our testing schedule, so if your child is exhibiting any symptoms of illness on their testing day- be sure to keep them home.
Also, due to recent updates in State testing procedures, cell phones, smart watches, and any bluetooth device (including headphones) MUST be secured during testing. We encourage students to leave these devices home on testing days when possible. When not possible, devices will be powered down and secured during testing
Universal Design For Learning (UDL)
Offer choices
Certain situations lend themselves to providing choice. Choices allow children to take ownership of their learning. These options can be as simple as offering a choice of plates, cups, etc. before sitting down for dinner. Allowing students to design a learning space at home also encourages choices. At times, offering choices is not appropriate. Use your judgment when deciding to offer options.
Know your child’s learning style and communication preference
Some children learn best by listening, while others benefit from written directions, or hands on experiences. Offer various means of communication and directions for your child. A schedule (verbal, written, or pictures for younger learners) helps children understand what to expect in their day. This same approach can be used when giving your child directions for tasks.
Using UDL principles at home encourages learning outside of the school environment. The key to incorporating UDL at home is to start slow. Small adjustments can have a big impact on your child’s development and confidence.
Attendance: Minutes Matter
The bell to start the school day rings at 8:30 a.m. We have had a problem with many students arriving late to school. This not only affects the student who is tardy, but also has an impact on the rest of the classroom. Many important events take place at the beginning of the school day. When a student arrives late, they are missing out on important classroom assignments as well as important announcements. They also interrupt the learning environment for the rest of the students. Please make every effort to assure your student starts the day off in positive way by getting them to school on time.
We have also have an increasing number of students leaving early daily. We dismiss at 3:30 PM unless otherwise noted. Students withdrawn early also miss on daily instruction and interventions. They also disrupt the learning environment. Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside the school day. We want to make sure all of our students are learning. We also do not want tardiness or early withdrawals to result in a truancy referral for any of our families.
