Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
February 28, 2020
February is Flying By...
We spent a lot of time discussing SSL projects this week (self-selected learning). This is similar to Genius Hour projects in which students choose a topic of interest and dig in deep to learn more about it. They create a topic question to guide their learning and are responsible for using their learning for the good of someone or a group of people. Some of the ideas that are being explored are:
- Creating a new recipe, making it, and sharing with the class or the teachers at SRE
- Studying the Declaration of Independence, creating a story using the facts about this significant document, and teaching the class through the story
- Researching fingernail polish designs, creating a pallet of new designs, sharing them with the class, and choosing one lucky winner in Room 9 to stay after school to receive a manicure
- Researching card tricks, practicing them, performing a card trick show in Room 9
- Turks and Caicos - What makes it such an awesome vacation destination? Creating a travel brochure to help travelers plan their trip
I absolutely love these ideas. The students are very excited about their learning and are motivated to dig deep in their learning. WARNING: Some students may need some materials from home. I plan to meet regularly with the students about their needs for their project. If I have supplies here at school to help them, I'll provide those, but your help might be needed in this area. I will be sure to give advanced warning as to when the SSL presentations will begin to ensure your child has enough time to prepare.
The February Reading BINGO Challenge was a great success. These Room 9 students participated:
- Katelyn, Maren, Ethan, Gabby, Chris, Brandt, Ben, Melina, Phoebe, Taylor, Sophie, Lucy, Sheza
Because of their hard work, they enjoyed some extra recess, sitting at the teacher's desk for the day, lunch with Mrs. Greene, 25 Dojo Points, treat from the treat drawer, sit by a friend for the day, show and tell, 15 minutes of free time.
That's all I have for now...

Amazing Things I Saw and Heard in Room 9...
- Maren and Ady worked together to write an opinion essay. They put so much effort into their work, asking for help from Mrs. Greene in order to make it the best it could be. Their efforts were VERY impressive!
- Sophie recognized that a student was struggling with a reading task. The student seemed overwhelmed and was trying to persevere through the difficulty. When the student successfully finished, Sophie went to the student and gave her a HIGH 5. You should have seen the look on the struggling student's face - priceless!!!
- A student in the class recognized Brock during Community Circle today for persevering through a difficult week. Brock has been sick and the student noticed he was working hard today to get back into the swing of things after being gone for a few days.
- Brandt got some good news at his doctor's appointment today. Several students in the class were excited to hear the good news.
WOW!!! I realize I have several more good news items to share, so --- I'll wait and share them next week!
Next Week in Room 9
Reading: Book Clubs!!
- Books Clubs are up and running. Students wrote their top three book title choices on a Post-It note. I tried to give each student their first choice, but that did not happen. Each group has met, created a plan, and has started reading and discussing their book. Some of the skills they will learn/review next week:
* Secondary characters and the role they play in the story
* Characters change throughout a book
* Characters learn lessons
* Story Elements
Math: Unit 7 - Fractions
- Liquid Volume - liters, milliliters
- Fraction Strips
I will hand back the graded Unit 6 Assessment on Monday, March 2. Those tests take forever to grade!
Writing: Prompt Writing
Students are learning to respond to a writing prompt based upon the TYPE of writing, TOPIC, TEXT EVIDENCE. Students must decode a writing prompt, understand how to respond to it, and use text evidence to support their thinking. This is extremely challenging, but we will tackle it together and you should see a very big improvement in your child's writing over the next month. This is a time for GROWTH!!
Word Study - Grammar
- Adverbs
- Review nouns, verbs, adjectives
Science: Sound
We will begin studying sound next week.
