“Make a Change” Fundraiser!
Through the leadership of Coach Linthicum, Wilbur S. Pence students, parents, and spectators at athletic events have been able to raise thousands of dollars during our "Pink" fundraisers over the years for the Susan B. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research. Traditionally, this has been done through athletic events. This year, we will be hosting the event as a school-wide intiative.
We know that many of our own families have been impacted by breast cancer and this is our way of giving back. It also provides us with an opportunity to have conversations with our students about caring, community service, and citizenship as we can each be a light in the world for others.
Beginning on Thursday, May 6th and ending on Thursday, May 13th - we will be encouraging students to bring change/coins to their advisory classes (for a donation to be counted towards the competition, it must be in coins). The top 3 classes to raise the most money will receive an ice cream party during R-block! We will also be designating a day where we encourage all of our students to wear pink in recognition of this effort.
Thanks again for continuing to work with us on making a change and creating some friendly competition!

Massanutten Technical Center Summer Academy
Good Afternoon Middle School Parents!
We are excited to be able to bring to you the Massanutten Technical Center Summer Academy again! This is a great opportunity for students currently in 6th-8th grade to get a hands-on experience with MTC and our programs, and have a great time!
Attached is the registration form for this year's Academy. Here are a few important reminders:
1. Please mark your top three preferences. There are only 10 spots open for each program, and a spot is only confirmed once payment is received. It is recommended that you choose three in case spots are filled in the first choice.
2. Registrations and payments can be returned either by hand deliver to MTC (Chris Dalton, Assistant Director) or mailed in using the information on the form.
We look forward to an exciting week of Summer Academy, where students will have the experience of a lifetime, and learn new skills! If you would like more information about the Academy and/or MTC, please visit us at www.mtcva.com!
Have a great afternoon!
Youth Wildflower Art Contest
Shenandoah National Park's annual Youth Wildflower Art Contest has gone virtual! After a year's hiatus because of COVIC-19 closures, we have found a way for local children in grades K-12 to participate in the contest once again. Instead of mailing artwork to the park, this year's young artists can simply upload their entries to an internet platform through the www.callforentry.org website.
For the subjects of their work, artists must use wildflowers that are native to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Shenandoah National Park. A list of wildflowers as well as reference photos may be viewed in the instructions. Submissions must be on flat media, and may include acrylic, watercolor, charcoal, pencil, fabric, etc.
Teachers, parents, and guardians may submit art for their students. As in previous years, the contest is open to students who are home-schooled or in public, private or city schools in the following counties: Albemarle, Augusta, Greene, Page, Madison, Rappahannock, Rockingham, Shenandoah and Warren. Artwork may be uploaded starting May 15, 2021, and continue through May 25.
Please pass this opportunity on to your students and art teachers. For more information, visit Virtual Wildflower Celebration & Youth Art Contest - Shenandoah National Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

Immunizations
NEW guidelines
- Please read carefully the RCPS immunization/Physical Examination Schedule for 2021-2022. Under sections Grade 6th and Grade 7th, ALL rising 7th graders will need to have their Tdap-booster (must be 11 years old) that is required for entry into 7th grade regardless of the interval since the last dose of tetanus-containing vaccine by this fall 2021-22 school year.
- They now also require all males and females to get their first dose of HPV and Meningococcal vaccine before entry of the 7th grade as well. We would like for you to start planning ahead on this and get your doctor's appointment scheduled now so this will be done prior to Augusta 2021.
The Health Department is still closed for these types of appointments and it will not be easy to make these appointments at the last minute.
If you have any questions please call and speak to the school nurse or ask your doctor.
