Cardinal Connection
October 2019
Message from Principal
Dear SPHS Family and Friends,
I want to thank our students, families, and community for an excellent start to the school year! It has been a busy few weeks as students get back into the routine and our teachers work to create a culture and environment dedicated to learning and growing. Now that we have completed one month of school, we have much to look forward to as we head into the fall season.
Homecoming week is just around the corner as we celebrate during the week of October 7. This is a great opportunity to positively show our Cardinal Pride! We will have a busy week of events that end with the community parade on Thursday, October 10, the Homecoming football game on Friday, and the Homecoming dance on Saturday. I always look forward to this week where students get to show their school spirit!
By now, students are in full swing with their classes; they have been completing projects, working on assignments, and finishing tests. Parents are always encouraged to be checking Infinite Campus to check on grades, academic progress, and student attendance. We want all of our students starting strong so they can end the year strong!
This year, we are working to increase our communication to our parents and offer more informational sessions that are relevant to your needs. This starts on October 29 in the SPHS Performing Arts Center where we will have a presentation on Teen Vaping. Studies show that upwards of 25% of high school students have vaped. In this session, parents and educators will have an opportunity to gain insight into what the facts are.
Our goal at SPHS is to ensure that all students are college and career ready when they leave our halls. To assist with students’ future goals, our counselors will be holding numerous student sessions throughout the year. At the end of September, our counselors held our annual WEF (Wisconsin Education Fair) for our Junior and Senior students. This was a great opportunity to meet with over 100 colleges, professionals, and military to learn about what they have to offer. Our counselors also meet with seniors to discuss the transition to post high school. The topics include: application submissions, transcript submission, ACT score submission, letters of recommendations, and scholarships. Please know the counselors are always available to help answer questions and parents are encouraged to reach out for any assistance.
As we head into October, there are a few key dates we want our families to be aware of:
October 7 Homecoming Week
October 10 Early Release for SPHS @ 2:05pm
October 10 Homecoming Parade @ 6:00pm
October 11 Homecoming Football Game @ 7:00pm
October 12 Homecoming Dance @ SPHS from 8:00pm-11:00pm
October 14 Picture Retake Day
October 16 PSAT Test
October 29 Vaping Informational Night held at SPHS @ 7:00pm
November 5 End of 1st Quarter
November 14/15 Parent Teacher Conferences
We are looking forward to continuing the great start to the year and we want to thank you for being such a great partner with the schools. As always, please let me know if you have any questions.
Kind Regards,
Keith Nerby, principal

AP exam registration
The CollegeBoard updated when Advanced Placement (AP) Test Registration is for the May 2020 exam. This year, students will need to register for each AP Exam they plan on taking by October 4, 2019. Students should have registered for the exam within their AP class and they are the only one who can sign up for the test. The district will add the exam fee(s) to Infinite Campus the week after October 4th. Parents will be able to log in to Infinite Campus to pay the fee online or students can bring a check payable to Sun Prairie Schools to Mrs. Bosonetta or Patricia Yunen. Payment will need to be made by October 25, 2019.
Each AP Exam is $94; however cost should not be a factor for taking an exam. Please reach out to Meghan Bosonetta (mlboson@sunprairieschools.org) or Patricia Yunen (piyunen@sunprairieschools.org) for help with financial questions or concerns. You may also reach out to the School Nutrition Department to access free and reduced services at 608.834.6544, or using this link, or this form in English, Spanish, or Hmong versions.
AP Exams will run May 4-May 15, 2020 (link for specific tests). It is important to get these dates on the calendar to avoid conflicts. However, if a conflict occurs, please reach out so that we can try to accommodate as best we can. Additionally, if a student decides not to take their AP exam, the cancellation fee is $50.
Lastly, if you are applying for accommodations for an AP Exam, an SSD form must be turned in to Meghan Bosonetta no later than November 22, 2019.
