Kudos, Transitions, and Thanks
- Please welcome Priscilla Rodriguez as our new School Administrative Assistant. She officially starts Monday, November 16.
- Let us extend last week's Psychologist Appreciation Week. Let us show our appreciation for Karla Hermosillo-Alcala for all she does to support our students and staff.
- Congratulations to Diana Kulhanek for coordinating our 3rd Take A Veteran To School Day. The performances and tributes just get better year after year. Many thanks and kudos to Sharon Maley and Tony Atienza for their students' performances; Charles Batchman and John McCourt for sound, lights, and props; and DiAnne Cabe for assistance with seating. Kudos to those who invited veterans to share their stories with students. Many students found the military displays interesting and informative. Community supporters such as Francine Maigue (from AssemblyMember Lorena Gonzalez's office), Chula Vista Council Member John McCann, and Superintendent Janney were also present to pay tribute to our veterans, including the Veteran of the Year and the President of the Veterans' Association that sponsors our event, and Diana's hard work in ensuring this event takes place.
- Congratulations to Coach Liliana Sandoval and her assistant, Coach Jose Medrano. The Girls Cross Country Team earned a co-league championship while the Boys Cross County Team earned a tri-league championship. Kudos on a great win on Coach Sandoval's first year as a Head Coach!
- Congratulations to Patrick Doerr for coordinating and sponsoring the 4th Annual Chula Vista Invitational Field Tournament. It has become that big that it had to be moved to another venue, San Ysidro High School, to accommodate participating bands and their families, fans, and friends.
- It was a great run. Kudos to Coach Joey Espinoza for leading the Girls Volleyball Team to CIF playoffs.
- Kudos to Linda Scott for a successful Piano Recital held at the PAC this past Sunday. Students in their second and third years of Piano performed.

Listening Campaign: Dr. Joe Fulcher
Dr. Joe Fulcher, our new Asst. Superintendent of Equity, Culture, and Student Services will be visiting Chula Vista High School on Monday, November 30, 2015. He is conducting a district-wide “Equity Listening Campaign” that is designed to engage all stakeholders in a discovery process through a series of semi-structured group interviews. At the conclusion of the one month listening campaign, Dr. Fulcher is expecting to have a greater understanding of district-wide equity opportunities and challenges as well as an assessment of the district’s current capacity to meet those challenges.
These interviews are voluntary and for those interested, please visit Dr. Fulcher during your prep period; he will be in the Learning Lab.
Innovative Schedule Information Corner
- The meeting with Superintendent Janney and District representatives to talk about the details of our innovative schedule has been scheduled to be on the week of November 30th. Hilda Bender, Debbie Nevin, and I will be attending for Chula Vista High School.
- You have all received from Debbie Nevin a link of courses that are offered in our district--the course book, so to speak. Departments can look at the course book to recommend courses that will enhance our students' learning experiences. Please know that courses will be offered subject to enrollment and resources.
- The Course Proposal Form to offer courses new to our school and/or new to our district is attached to the Principal Bulletin E-mail. If you are interested in offering a new course, this form must be filled out and returned to me by Tuesday, December 3 at NOON. I will review them and present them to the FAC, as part of our discussion on the Master Schedule. You can collaborate as a PLC or Department to fill out this form. If you have any clarifying questions on how to fill this form out, please see Hilda or I.
Walkthrough Feedback & Focus
To help us understand how the first best lesson unfolds, as evidenced by your PLC planning, the Assistant Principals and I will choose to walkthrough the same teacher's class at the same period for a week. This will mean that at a maximum, each administrator will visit the same five classrooms for a week to see how the first best lesson unfolds.
As we walk through this week, we will be looking for the following evidence of PLC planning of the first best lesson:
- What is the DLT and how does my agenda or class activity support its completion/mastery?
- How am I developing creating opportunities for structured student interaction?
- How have I planned for possible misconceptions?
- How am I scaffolding for English Learners and/or Students With Disabilities?
- How am I grouping my students so that they are helping each other reach their Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) as they collaborate?
PLC Collaboration
- Please work on the agenda that you had agreed upon based on your last PLC collaboration.
- A reminder that everyone is expected to stay on campus until the end of the PLC time. Thank you for your professionalism.
- You may choose to discuss a new course that you want to offer for the 2016-2017 school year. The Course Proposal Form to offer courses new to our school and/or new to our district is attached to the Principal Bulletin E-mail. If you are interested in offering a new course, this form must be filled out and returned to me by Tuesday, December 3 at NOON. I will review them and present them to the FAC, as part of our discussion on the Master Schedule. You can collaborate as a PLC to fill out the form.
- Consider the following suggestion: Specifically concentrate your planning around anticipating student difficulties or misconceptions in your lessons. From your experience or from data you have, what misconceptions or difficulties do students have with the lesson/unit you are/will be presenting? How do you/will you plan differently to address anticipated misconceptions or difficulties in learning of students? I truly believe that by just doing this will make a big difference in student learning, engagement, and achievement.
- Consider another suggestion: Final Exams is a few weeks away. In August, I mentioned that PLC's will have to create their own Final Exams as I expect all courses to give one. It is a prudent use of PLC time to create your Final Exam. It is my understanding that some subject areas have made previous exams available for teachers to use or model after.
- A copy of your PLC-created/adapted/adopted Final exam should be given to my office.
- Minutes should include products (lessons, CFA's, adjusted lesson plans, specific agreements on instructional strategy use) that should be uploaded to our CANVAS page. I want to see the result/s of your collaboration. Please see your Curriculum Coach for assistance, if needed.
Thank you for your focused engagement and hard work!
Faculty Meeting Agenda

For The Common Good
- BEFORE YOU LEAVE for THANKSGIVING BREAK: Please make sure that you unplug your refrigerator, computer, and mini-appliances. Please take home any food that will spoil. Leave your refrigerator door open so it will not smell musty when you come back. Please secure your classroom valuables in a locked cabinet. The custodians will be cleaning classrooms so please make sure that your clutter is minimal. The school will be closed for the week (except for a special arrangement with an IMII Grade Recovery session).
