Learning Outcomes: Counting and Cardinality, Gross Motor, Relationship Skills, Perception
Play this game with a balloon or a ball. The goal is to keep the item in the air and not let it touch the ground. Work together and keep count every time someone touches it. How many times can you touch it before it falls to the ground?
Why It's Important
Cooperation is an important life and school skill. When you play cooperative games, you help your child practice this skill. This game also helps your child grow number sense and sequencing skills. Both are needed for a strong math foundation.
Not Ready Yet
If cooperating is still hard for your child, change the game. Start by tapping the balloon around the circle and calling out the name of the next person who should tap it. Once you've gotten comfortable working together, try another round, but this time, count the number of taps. This time, see how many times you can tap it as it goes around the circle before it touches the ground.
Need a Challenge
If your child is ready for a challenge, try a little addition. Tap the balloon around the circle once. Count the number of times you tap the balloon. Stop and ask your child how many more times you would have to tap the balloon to keep it up in the air for 10 taps. Start from the number you've already tapped. Use finger counting and counting on strategies to find the answer.
PLAY is our brain's favorite way to learn. (quote by Diane Ackerman)

- build confidence
- feel loved, happy and safe
